Taking the plate at the top of the first inning, Volpe was facing Tigers ace Brendan White. Down with a 1-2 count, the pitcher stared down to hole hoping to get his man with the final pitch of the innings. However, the commentators seemed to believe that White lost his grip at the last minute.

The wayward delivery rose up as it approached home plate almost catching Volpe full on his face. Luckily for the rookie’s sharp reflexes, the batter quickly turned around to catch the ball on his back instead and took first base. Thankfully, no specific injury has been reported for the young buck.

Volpe seemed to shake off the blow with relative ease, but his confidence remained unshaken. The innings ended with 2 runs in the bank for the struggling Yankees who ended up winning the game 6-2 on the night.

Anthony Volpe’s Rookie Season

Despite the lofty expectations and projections from the promising youngster, his stats don’t particularly jump off the page. The shortstop has not had a season that has set the division alight but seems to be calmly motoring on with a .216 batting average this year.

With his impressive defensive contributions too, Volpe is making a strong jump for rookie of the year talks with a 3.4 WAR rating which is higher than his idol and Yankees icon Derek Jeter who posted a 3.3 WAR rating in his first season in 1996.

Volpe stands as one of the few bright spots for the New York Yankees this season and luckily, despite the hit, appears to be in stable condition and unlikely to join the IL. With the roster expansion too approaching the Yankees could be set to cut their losses on the 2023 season and use the remaining run of games to blood in some youngsters for 2024.
