Finally, the Boston Red Sox have managed to get the All-Star Alex Bregman! But a major problem looming on Bregman is due to the 22-year-old top prospect, Kristin Campbell. While Bregman is expected to play second base, Campbell is considered better to make the opening-day roster as the starting baseman. Think that makes sense?
Looking at his previous performance, Kristian Campbell made 330/.439/.558 slash line with 20 homers and 24 stolen bases across 115 games when moving from High-A to Triple-A in 2024. He led the Minors in 180 wRC+ while ranking second in on-base percentage and.997 OPS, which is great. Campbell’s unprecedented rise makes him a great choice as the second baseman for the Red Sox, taking away Bregman’s potential position.

The Red Sox looking to play their top prospect at the opening day roster
February 16: Alex Bregman finally becomes an official member of the Boston Red Sox. However, a question remains on where Bregman will play. When asked during an interview, Red Sox manager Alex Cora remained silent on playing Bregman at second or third base after his signing for a three-year, $120 million contract. While Cora cited making the decision later when the roster comes together, the Red Sox seem willing to give their top prospect, Kristian Campbell, the opportunity to make the Opening Day roster. Sounds legit?

Well, given Kristian Campbell’s impressive performance in 2024 and Bregman being already 30 years of age, the Dodgers will like to play Campbell at second base and see whether it works or not. However, in that case, Rafael Devers could become a designated hitter while DH Masataka Yoshida, coming off a labrum surgery, might find no place. Donning the Red Sox jersey, Bregman was found to practice at second base and shortstop; it is very likely for Campbell to make it to the team as a starting baseman. While Bregman’s addition wouldn’t matter much when it comes to Campbell’s promotion, the top prospect’s presence might cause challenges for Bregman, along with others like Romy Gonzalez, David Hamilton, and Vaughn Grissom.
Alex Cora has his say on Alex Bregman
While Red Sox manager Alex Cora remained silent on what position Alex Bregman would play, he has heaped praise for Bregman. The reason? Well, Alex Bregman has been a legend in the MLB; his contribution to the Houston Astros can never be ignored. Although Bregman’s 2024 batting average of.260, 30 doubles, two triples, and 26 home runs is not very impressive for a player of his calibre, he still has a lot to offer. Given the roster changes and what appears to be better for the team, Alex Cora is therefore optimistic that he will become a Gold Glove second baseman. But that doesn’t end here!

Cora also mentioned that Alex Bregman has shared his interest in moving to the second base. He said, “He has quick hands, good footwork, and he has done it before.” Cora has also instilled faith in him as a great infielder and a great teammate who could not only prove his potential but would also guide other people within the organization, and that’s why his presence counts immensely in the clubhouse.
