The New York Yankees, emerging fresh from a disappointing playoff run last year, have been resolute to make a strong comeback in 2024. However, a ripple effect of injuries has cast a shadow on their entire season raising a question mark on their abilities. Star slugger DJ LeMahieu has been sidelined with a foot issue, while ace pitcher Gerrit Cole is out owing to his shoulder discomfort with an undisclosed return date. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. With key relievers and young prospects also sidelined, what are the Yankees going to do?

Well, it all looks like the perfect recipe for disaster. With the ghost of injuries looming large even before the regular season started, will their remaining healthy players step up? Or will the depleted roster sink their ship laden with championship hopes? With that, it’s worth finding out how these injuries could impact the Yankees’ season. Hopefully one can find the answer to this question – Do they have a way out in overcoming this adversity?

First up, is Jasson Dominguez, the team’s prized catching prospect and a rising star in Minor League Baseball. He is expected to be absent in the first half of the 2024 season owing to his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Dominguez, who has the moniker “The Martian” owing to his otherworldly talent, caught the eyes of the big league folks during his brief stint in the majors last season. Then came his elbow injury. After undergoing surgery in September 2023, he is recovering as per the typical timeline for Tommy John surgery. For non-pitchers that duration is 9-10 months.

Though initial reports suggested a return as a designated hitter sooner, updates hint at a more cautious approach. With that, his return has been pushed to around the All-Star break in July. This is a significant blow to the Yankees, who were expecting to mashup Dominguez’s power hitting and defensive expertise into the lineup sooner rather than later.

Given their current situation, their commitment seems toward ensuring a full and healthy recovery for this future star.

Lou Trivino’s injured elbow creates more void with Tommy Kahnle out till mid-April

The Yankees bullpen, which is already facing a gap with flamethrower Tommy Kahnle sidelined till mid-April, is further depleted with reliever Lou Trivino out. It’s his right elbow ligament strain that’s the main reason. Trivino might make a comeback in mid-July. Now that leaves a significant void in the Yankees’ relief pitching through the beginning of the season.

This whole injury episode comes as a blow to the Yankees’ hopes of creating a dominant bullpen. On one hand, Kahnle is expected to return soon after Opening Day. On the other, Trivino’s prolonged absence creates a double whammy for the Yanks. Both relievers are crucial contributors. Kahnle boasted an impressive 2.66 ERA in 42 appearances last season. Additionally, Trivino put up a solid 2.93 ERA this season before his injury.

DJ LeMahieu joins Gerrit Cole on the injury list days before the season opener

With the Yankees’ hopes for a healthy start to the season fading fast another key player joins the IL. Infielder DJ LeMahieu has been dealing with discomfort in his right foot after fouling a ball off himself during a spring training game.

The X-rays have revealed no serious damage, however, LeMahieu’s health for Opening Day isn’t up to the mark. He is presently going through daily evaluations. Only time will reveal details about his availability relative to the season opener. However, according to CBS Sports the player is expected to be out until at least early April.

This news comes right after ace pitcher Gerrit Cole was sidelined due to his elbow injury. Cole’s absence shook the entire Yankees’ pitching rotation leaving a massive crack in their formerly solid plan. Now, with LeMahieu also potentially missing time, the team’s offense could also sputter out of the gate.

The Yankees will be hoping for a speedy recovery for both LeMahieu and Cole, but their health issues raise concerns about the team’s ability to perform at their best early in the season.

A big trouble: How these injuries can impact New York Yankees

A bone bruise in his right foot has kept LeMahieu out of action. This leaves a ripple effect on the Yankees’ offensive strategy. His steady on-base percentage tends to prepare sluggers like Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. With his absence, the team has moved to Jon Berti to fill the gap at third base.

With Cole out of the rotation, the Yankees’ ace has a huge void in the starting rotation. Early on, the team would have had to rely on less experienced arms, however, Nestor Cortes has found himself in that position. But there might be some additional strain on an already worn-out bullpen.

Let’s not forget the issues go beyond just these two stars. Tommy Kahnle, the reliever with a fiery fastball, is also sidelined with an inflammation in his shoulder and is unlikely to be set for Opening Day. Oscar Gonzalez, an outfielder who was anticipated to contend for a roster spot, faced an facial injury following a foul ball. There’s no clarity on when he’ll be back.

The fact that another important reliever, Lou Trivino, is still sidelined due to a right elbow ligament strain and might not return until late April or early May, is just adding to the problems. Oswald Peraza, a young prospect further down the roster was anticipated to challenge for the starting shortstop position. However, he is currently dealing with a shoulder strain and is probably not going to return until April or May.

Well, the impact and the intensity of the issue depend on the recovery timelines. While Short-term absences might be manageable, but long periods on the injured list could cripple the Yankees’ early season performance. Hopefully that does not jeopardize their playoff aspirations.

A way out? Can the New York Yankees overcome this for a better season?
