MLB great Derek Jeter had a legendary baseball career spread through the 20 years he spent in the big league. During this time, his desire for unwavering perfection, and leadership abilities, led his team to win five World Series. Jeter’s life was mostly about his game when he played, and the game is still a huge part of his life. Even though Jeter bid farewell to the game in 2014, baseball never left him. He could not stay away from the game longer than three years.

After this time, he started learning Spanish. However, the reason behind it was revealed only after Captain Clutch became CEO of the MLB franchise Miami Marlins in 2017.

After retiring, Jeter saw that the Marlins were struggling both on and off the field. There, he saw an opportunity to turn the team around. Hence, he bought stakes in the team and brought with him his decades-long experience and winning mentality. Even though Derek’s stint with the Marlins did not last long, he made some thoughtful changes intended to help the team in the long run. And that included learning Spanish.

A year into Jeter being Marlins’ CEO, in November 2018, Jeter gave an interview to the ‘E News’. There he revealed the reason behind his learning Spanish. Talking to the reporter, the ex-CEO of the Marlins said, “The one thing that I said when we took over the organization was that when you have Latin America or Hispanic players coming to the united states, everyone just assumes that they speak English, and they almost expect them to speak English. So what I’ve done is..making sure that our Hispanic players learn English, but at the same time, our English-speaking players learn Spanish. Then on top of that, I’m doing it in front office as well.”

Considering that almost every team has players of different ethnicities, it was a great initiative from Jeter. And he applied it to him as well. But it is yet to be known if this initiative remained after Jeter gave up CEO’s position and sold his shares of the team.

Why did Jeter quit the Marlins?

After being the CEO of the Marlins for over four years, Derek realized that the vision he saw of the team did not align with the management anymore. Hence, he sold his four percent shares of the team and stepped down as Marlins CEO in 2022.
