Can Mookie Betts truly rival Derek Jeter's legacy, or is he dreaming too big?

Mookie Betts is now a three-time world champion. But the chatter is that he wants to fill his hand with nothing but rings. As the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their eighth World Series title with a lively parade, this victory marked Betts’ second championship with the Dodgers and the third overall. With three rings now in his collection, Betts holds the record for the most championships among active players. However, fans at Dodger Stadium were in for a surprise when Betts expressed his ambitions for the future.

Mookie wants more and hopes to give competition to a former Yankee legend, Derek Jeter. In a recent interview, Mookie Betts was told he doesn’t want to stop with three and fill the hand with nothing but rings. Betts claimed, “At least do that. I told Jeter I’m gonna catch him. I got some work to do if I wanna get there. But I wouldn’t wanna do it with anybody else but the Dodgers.” Derek Jeter has five rings to his name with the Yankees; now that Mookie has three, this dream to match him does not look far-fetched. But the 32-year-old does have time constraints – his contract with the Dodgers.

On July 22, 2020, the Los Angeles Dodgers made headlines with a move securing Mookie Betts with a 12-year, $365 million contract extension. Now with 6 years remaining, will Betts be able to win two more rings and fill up his hand? Nevertheless, getting to three is also a big win on its own. The American professional baseball outfielder and shortstop is the only active hitter in MLB to have 3 rings to his name. But this accolade hasn’t been without its ups and downs. One of the downs Betts encountered was not on the fields but with the stands.

Mookie Betts called the fan incident in Game 4 “irrelevant”

In the bottom of the first inning of Game 4, Gleyber Torres launched a ball down the right field foul line, and Mookie Betts, at his best self, was about to catch it. However, the moment took a wild twist when a New York Yankees fan, sitting among the home crowd, reached out and attempted to snatch the ball from Betts’s grasp. This bold move didn’t go unnoticed with the security personnel quickly intervening at the scene.

While they ejected the fan who was later identified as Capobianco and his friend John Peter from the game, in the aftermath of this incident, MLB officials even suggested a ban for the duo to send a clear message about the boundaries of fan behavior. They were later banned from attending Game 5 of the World Series. After Game 4, Mookie Betts addressed the matter during his exchange with the gathering reporters. With a calm demeanor, Betts noted the whole episode was “Irrelevant because [the Dodgers] lost the game.”
