But that one comment made by Rodriguez in 2001 will always haunt Jeter. And recently, the former New York Yankees captain opened up about how Rodriguez’s remark affected their friendship.
Will Derek Jeter ever forgive Alex Rodriguez?
Dating back to 2001, when Alex Rodriguez was a big thing in MLB, he made some serious remarks about his then-close friend, Derek Jeter.
Rodriguez had questioned the playing capacity of Jeter. The former Yankees’ shortstop had said that beating Jeter was never a concern. “He’s never had to lead,” Rodriguez said. “He doesn’t have to, he can just go and play and have fun, and hit second… You never say, ‘Don’t let Derek beat you.’ That’s never your concern.”
Reacting to Rodriguez’s comments, Jeter, in his documentary, clarified his stand and said that he would not have said something like that to a true friend. And it bothered him.
“I’m very, very loyal. As a friend, I’m loyal. I just looked at it as ‘I wouldn’t have done it. He’s not a true friend, is how I felt,” Jeter said in “The Captain.” Jeter concluded by saying, “Because I wouldn’t do it to a friend.”

Notably, it is something that Rodriguez will regret about doing it. Meanwhile, being a responsible and generous guy, A-Rod also appeared in Jeter’s documentary and accepted his fault.
“To allow that opening, that gap, that space to come between Derek and I, that’s on me,” Alex Rodriguez said.
