Young Derek Jeter’s Passion Bloomed in the Hills of Kalamazoo

The iconic baseball shortstop grew up in Kalamazoo. His nostalgia for the place is so strong that makes him emotional years after he left the place. Jack Curry, in his book of Jeter, recorded the legend saying the “patch of grass across from our townhouse No. 1183” was a dreamland for him. It was the first baseball field where he hit the first Home Runs of his life. On page no. 149 of the account of Derek read, “I ate, slept, went to school, and played baseball on this hilly slope about 150 feet from our townhouse.”
Fortunately, the baseball icon never faced restrictions from his parents. They knew where to find him when he went missing. According to Jeter, “They didn’t even have to open the door to know I would be playing baseball on the hill. I was the Pied Piper of the development, and it didn’t matter to me who wanted to play.” The legend even recorded that his urge to play baseball was so high that he didn’t care for his companions, irrespective of whether they were older or younger than him.

If he got less companions, he played catch, but when there were 4 people, including him, it used to be a proper game. The former Yankees Captain was proud of his Home Runs and claimed, “I counted every one of my homers and I think I almost passed Hank Aaron in one year. I must have had about 700 bombs.” Also, The Captain once said his love for baseball and the Yankees is a family tradition.

The 2009 World Series Champion began and ended his baseball career with the Yankees. Years after his retirement, he is still passionate about his former team. Once, he expressed his reason for this love as a family tradition that he got from his grandmother. She was a Yankees fan who introduced the game and the team to her grandson.
