Derek Jeter stayed away from controversy as much as possible during his entire baseball career. The Yankee legend always had the best interests of the team in mind, and always preferred to stay away from trouble. But despite this, Jeter was unable to keep his name out of the papers due to how big a star he was. 

Furthermore, his dating life made the headlines on a regular basis. It was particularly difficult during his relationship with Mariah Carey. He still did his best to avoid media attention. The Yankee star once revealed the reason that he avoided the media and didn’t even read what they said.

In addition to wanting to avoid controversy, Jeter had another reason to avoid the media. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeter was scared of what the media would say about him. Furthermore, he did not want it to affect his performance on the field. 

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, Jeter said, “I was always scared that I’d see my name and then scroll to see what they’re saying. And I didn’t want to deal with that when I was playing. I’d tell my family and friends, ‘If you read something or hear something, don’t tell me about it.’ I didn’t want to read negativity.”

The Yankees legend was afraid of what the media would say and the impact it would have on his surroundings. The Yankee legend was always straightforward with what he told the media. Even with cases like Alex Rodriguez’s steroid usage, Jeter was very diplomatic
