Derek Jeter guided the New York Yankees to numerous victories throughout his MLB career. His dedication to carrying his team to glory made him a heroic figure in New York. He persistently strived to ensure that the Yankees remain an MLB powerhouse. But on an unfortunate evening in 1999, Jeter realized that not everyone in New York respects him. 

Derek Jeter famously lived out his playing tenure in MLB as the Yankees’ shortstop. Having made his MLB debut in 1995, he built a Hall Of Fame-worthy legacy. Jeter retired in 2014 as a five-time World Series champion. In addition, he also made 14 All-Star appearances.

Jeter’s impactful record in attack and defense alike established him as one of the most successful shortstops in baseball history. But not everyone is everybody’s choice of a player. No amount of logical reason can alter that fact. So that applied to Jeter when one evening, he entered the record store in New York. 

Derek Jeter on the receiving end 

Derek Jeter is a person who would normally get greeted as a highly reputed celebrity in public. But a salesman at Circuit City on East 86th Street once fired nasty words at Jeter. The salesman working at a VCR store simply told Jeter, “You suck.” The proceedings began as he tried to locate a VCR that Jeter was trying to purchase.

When the salesman noticed that all the first three choices of Jeter were out of stock, he invited Jeter to another registry. Staying in touch with his sense of humor, Jeter asked, “Doesn’t anything work in this store? My credit card doesn’t work either.” But the man bluntly replied, “Yeah, well, you suck anyway.”

A surprised Jeter inquired back, but the guy maintained his cold tone and also mentioned ‘Griffey’ as a better player. Jeter asked him if he has ever compared himself to another worker. The salesman then awkwardly asked if he offended Jeter. Controlling his anger, Jeter replied, “No, not at all. I like hearing that I suck.”  

Derek Jeter’s accomplished career as a Yankee 

Personal opinions aside, Jeter rose to be an all-time great in baseball and an iconic legendary athlete. Post-retirement as a player, his contributions received the due honors felicitated by awards. He got his jersey retired by the Yankees administration. Jeter is also a Hall Of Fame inductee and Monument Park honoree.
