Letting go isn’t always easy, but the Seattle Mariners made a bold move by ending their nine-year relationship with manager Scott Servais. In a surprising and abrupt decision, the Mariners decided to part ways with Servais during his ninth season at the helm—a rare midseason firing that caught many off guard.
Even more unusual was how Servais discovered the news. Instead of hearing it directly from the front office, he learned of his dismissal through a news alert, hours before he was formally informed by the team. Despite the jarring way he found out, Servais responded with class and composure. Just hours after the news broke, he issued a heartfelt message to the public and the team. In it, he expressed gratitude to the players, team owners, fans, and the city of Seattle, emphasizing his deep appreciation for his time with the Mariners and his excitement for what lies ahead in his future.
This unexpected turn of events leaves Mariners fans and baseball enthusiasts wondering what’s next for both Servais and the team as they each chart new paths forward.

Mariners part ways with Scott Servais
While some speculation grew about a possible change in the managerial position, Servais did not expect to receive the news of his dismissal in such an abrupt and bizarre way. In a statement, Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto said, “We believe that we need a new voice in the clubhouse.” Dipoto also thanked Scott for all his efforts in Seattle over the past nine years. The Mariners made this decision after experiencing an appalling 1–8 road trip. After leading their division by ten games at one point, the Mariners now trail the Astros by five games in the AL West.
Serv was the second manager to be let go this season, following Pedro Grifol from the Chicago White Sox. Desperate for a turnaround, the team had already fired their hitting coordinator and bench coach before relieving Scott of his duties. The team also let go of their hitting coach, Jarret DeHart. After officially losing his position, Scott issued a statement, which read:
“I have devoted my entire life to baseball, from playing little league games in Coon Valley, Wisconsin, to leading the Seattle Mariners for nearly a decade. It has been one of the greatest honors of my career, and my family and I are grateful for the shared experiences along the way.”

With just 34 games remaining this year, the Mariners have named former catcher Dan Wilson as their new team manager. Wilson has been a key member of the organization, working with players at every level over the past 11 years, including as a special assistant for player development.
In the same statement that addressed the dismissal of Scott, they also mentioned Wilson’s recruitment by the Mariners. Dipoto praised Dan, saying, “He is well respected within and outside of our clubhouse, and we are confident he will do a great job leading our group over the final six weeks of the season and moving forward.”

Servais’ Legacy
The now-former Mariners manager, Scott Servais, managed to break the franchise’s long-standing postseason drought in 2022, but the magic didn’t last. By 2024, the team found itself back in familiar territory—another lackluster season marred by a disastrous midseason collapse. Servais, who had joined the Mariners from the Los Angeles Angels alongside Jerry Dipoto and current general manager Justin Hollander after the 2015 season, inherited a veteran team in the midst of a transition.
During his tenure, Servais made his mark, leaving the Mariners with a record of 680-642, second only to the legendary Lou Piniella in team history. His .515 winning percentage reflects the ups and downs of his time with the team. Under Servais’ guidance, the Mariners underwent a significant rebuilding effort, bringing in key players like catcher Cal Raleigh, franchise cornerstone Julio Rodriguez, and assembling one of the league’s most formidable starting rotations. These moves gave fans hope for a bright future, even as the present remained turbulent.

Despite the unceremonious way in which he received the news of his departure, Servais chose to handle it with grace, wishing the Mariners nothing but success moving forward. But as the team looks to the future, the question remains: was letting go of Servais the right move for a franchise still seeking consistent success?
