Friends who help each other grow and stay together through thick and thin are not just friends but family. Derek Jeter and Long were a duo whose dynamic got appreciated by only a few people. 

RD Long had helped Derek Jeter in many ways when he was starting in the game. From living together to playing together, from doing chores together to partying together, they have done it all. 

Long groomed Derek Jeter to be the prince of New York

Always ready for the next good time, Long was loud and outgoing, whereas Jeter was shy and funny during that time. 

Both of them kept in touch and after their 1998 world series triumph, Long had set up the Yankees’ celebration party. It was the first time he had seen Jeter after his retirement. However, they have seen each other every year after that. 

When asked about Long, Derek had said, “That was my roommate. R.D. was older than me. We were together a long time, so we were pretty close. You’re living in an apartment for the first time, you’re 18 years old, you have laundry to do … I learned a lot of things from him. He definitely helped me a lot.”

Jeter and RD were friends of each other, not the fans. Long could talk to him like no other, and he also once told Jeter, “Jeet, when it’s time for you to go, I’m going to be the first one to tell you, ‘You need to get off that field, boy.”

To this, Jeter had replied, “Well Deebo, when you get ready to make that call, don’t call me.”

What followed this statement was nothing but laughter from Jeet’s Deebo.

Long and Jeter were closer than brothers

The duo’s relationship was so tight that they’ve grown together. Jeter was a groomsman at Long’s wedding. They used to work out together, party together, and love each other as well.

Even though Long had three brothers, he was still closer to Jeter than any of them. He was never that much closer to any other person in his life. Their base was the same, their core was the same.
