In a week the Toronto Blue Jays have turned from a dream team to everyone’s favorite punchline. It’s a tragic story for them, one in which they chose the island of Shohei Ohtani over that of Juan Soto and ended up stranded in the sea with nowhere to go. Baseball fans are trolling the misfortune that has befallen the Blue Birds. Now it seems that their ace has taken notice and decided to post a cryptic message on his X account.

Baseball is one of the greatest sports when it comes to banter. Fans around the league love to troll each other but rarely does everyone decide to gang up on one team. Although the club has not responded, ace Kevin Gausman will tolerate no words of disrespect.

The sound of fans laughing at the Blue Jays is echoing across the internet. It seems the sneers have reached the ears of Kevin Gausman, who posted on X that he hated “seeing people talk s**t about Toronto”  and noted the high passion of the team’s fan base.

It certainly seems that the Blue Jays are hurting hard after not only losing the Ohtani sweepstakes but also completely missing Juan Soto’s trade talks as well. The team may be the laughingstock of the internet but Gausman will defend them until the end. A known supporter of Hogtown, the 32-year-old pitcher signed a five-year $110 million deal with the Blue Birds on Dec. 1, 2021.

While he will stay on for three more years in the bullpen, the team still needs help in the hitting department. It cannot be denied that things haven’t gone out of hand yet. Cody Bellinger remains in the market. The recent picture that Bellinger’s fiancee posted has hinted that the Jays have decided to go full-in on Cody Love. Toronto’s heart must be shattered but there is at least one thing they can feel good about.

The changed perception of the Blue Birds

There is no denying that some of the Blue Jays’ stature has increased after Ohtani’s sweepstakes. They undoubtedly would have become the top team had they gotten the two-way player of the century. But they’ve still come out as winners, firmly placing themselves in the “big boys club.”

For a team that has never paid the luxury tax on payrolls, perhaps acquiring Ohtani had always been a far-fetched dream. Even so, there is an undeniable change in perception for a team that fought tooth and nail to get to October in 2023. It’s a long road ahead but perhaps made easier by the struggles they’ve already faced.
