I can’t remember a sporting event or an academic meeting that at least one of them didn’t attend”, Derek recalls in his memoir. While this itself seems sufficient, “most of the time, it was both of them” that showed up for him.

Their active presence in every success or hiccup in their son’s life wasn’t just a show of support. It was proof of their dedication and love for their son’s journey. “I think I could have told my parents that I wanted to be the first astronaut to play shortstop on the moon and they would have encouraged me to do that, too,” Jeter fondly recollects on page 22 of the book. It’s a pure sentiment and his unconditional belief that his parents believed in his aspirations no matter how unconventional or daring they might have seemed.
