Losing a parent is never easy, no matter the status of one’s relationship with them. And losing them at a young age is especially harder when a kid doesn’t have that loving adult to come home to. But eventually, with loss comes acceptance, as well as honoring that person’s memory. And Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers is doing it beautifully.
A Southern California native, Freeman holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Canada. Both his parents, Fred and Rosemary, were born in the land of ice hockey. The first baseman holds the memory of his mother close to his heart, as she passed away of skin cancer when Freeman was just 10 years old. Previously a Braves player, the 33-year-old is now signed with the Dodgers. But when it comes to the World Baseball Classic, Freeman will always and forever choose Canada over the USA.
And after a recent interview, when the first baseman talked about the connection between baseball and his mom, his wife couldn’t be prouder.

Freddie Freeman leaves Chelsea Freeman in tears after a heartfelt confession
The Dodgers star has previously played for Canada once before. And while the Maple Leaf is not exactly famous for his baseball players, Freeman is not concerned. To him, the country represents the love his parents feel for it, something his mom entrusted to him before she passed away.
“I’m not sure this is what she would want me to do, but in my heart, this is what I feel I should be doing to honor her,” the Dodgers player said in a heavy voice as if holding back tears.

And Chelsea Freeman, the pro baseballer’s wife, couldn’t help but feel touched by Freeman’s reasoning behind the decision to play for Canada. She retweeted the clip from the LA team’s account where Freeman talks about his mom. She captioned it, “I am married to the most precious human alive.”
The Canadian team may surprise fans with a win after all
Easily the star player on a team of very young players, Freddie Freeman, is scoring wins for Team Canada. For a nation that is known for ice hockey and not baseball, Canada still has some good players. In a surprise win against Great Britain recently, and team U.S.A.’s loss to Mexico, both teams’ fortunes have been reversed.

“In the cage, Freddie was talking about his routine, his approach, how you have to keep the routine and don’t stray from it because that’s one thing that you always have to have,” said Owen Cassie, Team Canada outfielder, as reported by ESPN.
