New York Yankees are inarguably the greatest team in the history of MLB. Not even any doubt about that. But to make a great team requires great players. And when talking about the Yankees, Derek Jeter has been one of the most valuable players for the Pinstripes.

Whether it is about his leadership skills or the winning mentality, Jeter had the Yankees DNA running through his veins. Calm like a river and aggressive like a volcano, Jeter was a pure champion in the ballpark. He is one of the very few MLB players who have played for a single franchise throughout their career. This makes him an even more important player for the Yankees.

Derek Jeter had an elite mentality from his younger days

With the illustrious career he had, Derek Jeter is an inspiration for many young players. The Yankees legend has collaborated with ESPN for a multi-part documentary series named “The Captain”.

Recently, ESPN released a teaser of the series in which Jeter is talking about his younger days. Jeter said that he used to follow Johnny Damon since his younger days. And he would tell his parents that one day he will get there, where Johnny was.

“I am a hyper-focused man, and that’s on anything. I set my mind to some and I’ll do anything to make it happen… USA Today, every year would have the high school all-American team and I would tell my parents, I am going to be on this one day,” Jeter said. “Johnny Damon was the number one rated high school player. I did not know Johnny, but his name now is my head. So it’s like alright, well, I am going to get up there where Johnny is.”

Jeter also opened up that he did not want to be the best player in Kalamazoo or even in Michigan. But the Yankees legend wanted to be the best player in his high school, which he eventually became.
