The easy-going former Yankees captain, Derek Jeter, had a nice way to start a day in the clubhouse. The model of correctness in the public eye was someone in the Yankees clubhouse who could bond with anyone around him.

Luis Castillo, the batboy for the New York Yankees from 1998 to 2005, revealed the side of the players that no one has ever seen before, in his memoir, “Clubhouse Confidential.”

The memoir not only included the players, but also the team’s manager, Joe Torre.

How did Derek Jeter start the day in the clubhouse?

The mood with which one starts the day is the mood one stays with the rest of the day. Therefore, Jeter always started the day with a carelessly, funny greeting. Work should be enjoyed, and the shortstop definitely enjoyed his work of playing in his dream team. And as a captain, he did what he could to lighten up the environment.

Gliding through the batboys and attendants, Jeter used to greet everyone with, “How’re you doin’, biatches?”

It was a shock to many who did not know Jeter, but this was his way of giving the day a head start.

His easy-going personality of joking around and teasing people was not known by his fans, and Castillo’s memoir told a lot of that to Jeter’s fans.

What was the tradition in the team?

There was a tradition going on in the team at that time. In that tradition, everyone was given nicknames by the captain of the team.

And the batboy, Luis Castillo, was also nicknamed by the captain Derek Jeter on his first day of joining. 

When Luis got introduced to the captain and told him his name, Jeter said, “Nah. That’s it! Your nickname is Squeegee… You look like a squeegee.” 

With that, he smiled, and left Luis wondering why did he get such a strange name, and what a squeegee was?

Nowadays, the attendants sign a confidentiality agreement therefore they cannot reveal such things about the players of the game. But Castillo did it at the right time, and naturally, the fans loved it.
