Looking at the New York Yankees‘ inner workings and decision-making process is interesting. As they gear up for a renewed 2024, their choice of players will be a myriad of talents. With the Juan Soto deal almost done, it’s time to look at the next steps that will strengthen their defense; which is also one of their often-discussed areas of improvement.

It is not to be forgotten that while the 25-year-old Dominican won’t cost the team too many runs, it may also not be his strong suit. One one-hand offense might be taken care of with his help, the team might need to amp up his skills with the gloves. That said, it’s worth looking at the potential combinations of the Yankees’ outfield.

The New York Yankees Potential Outfield

Given the Yankees’ expansive left field and requirement for a long-range player, the team needs a defensive player with strong tactical skills to play left field. Since Soto isn’t the best defender, he might be used in right or center field. With that, Aaron Judge‘s position in the center or right field becomes intriguing as a result. Aaron Boone did acknowledge that he’d be happy to employ Judge in center field in 2024. But what about others?

Well Boone was positive that Giancarlo Stanton, who currently is “lighter” and “leaner,” would do a good job at outfield defense in the upcoming season. Also, it could be speculatively derived that Trent Grisham, might play center field. The NYY believe that with a floor like this in center, the Yankees could ease bringing in the Tommy John surgery-affected Jasson Domínguez next season. Currently he is in the process of recovery. It is also important to assess where the newly acquired Alex Verdugo will be placed.

Verdugo will play the same position as a corner outfielder in pinstripes that he has been playing for Boston the past few seasons, according to manager Aaron Boone’s plan. Alex has played excellent right field at Fenway Park, which suggests that he can handle left field at the Yankee Stadium. The skipper also referred to Verdugo as a premium defender.

In the Midst of Juan Soto’s Trade, Yankee’s Strategize Using Their Newest Acquisition

The Yankees are quite excited about their actions this off season. So much so that Boone said, “I’m really excited about it. He’s actually been a guy that we’ve talked about now for a while and we’re finally able to get something done there. He’s done some things against us, he’s a really good two-way player, defends well in the corners. Obviously really good bat-to-ball [skills], left-handed. Feel like there’s an edge he plays the game with”. His words give hope and optimism to the Yankees faithful as they eagerly wait for news on onboarding Soto.

While the 25-year-old is an average defender in the corner outfield areas, his defense is merely a blip. Thanks to his mighty and elite hitting prowess. He can bat in a way that would, in no time, reform the Yankees’ lineup. Well, assessing pros and cons is an ongoing process, but for the Yankees, so far so good.
