Not long before Alex Rodriguez became a professional baseball player, he hailed from a lower-middle-class immigrant family. As someone who used to view wealth as synonymous with the bank balance, the New York-born had a life-changing realization. Two decades ago, after reading Rich Dad Poor Dad, the meaning of financial literacy changed for him. Not only that, he revealed that, all in all, the book changed his life.

As A-Rod said, he shared an exciting parenting snippet from his pre-baseball era. Alex shared, “I grew up, both of my immigrant parents from Dominican Republic. They both taught me what they knew, which was very little, is How to Survive.” He continued, “But although they didn’t have a lot of resources, they were great role models because they absolutely worked very hard,” which rescued him from childhood financial hardships.

Growing up in Miami, he would watch the Mets or the Yankees game on cable he recalled never feeling poor. A-Rod had big dreams in his mind and these ambitions only grew clearer as he got older.

Learning how to survive comes as a package when one’s an immigrant. Rightly so, A-Rod’s parents taught him that what American dream could be, out of whatever little they knew. With that, little Alex started his journey to become the A-Rod he is today. But there’s more.
