Here is how Derek Jeter earned $5 million instead of $750,000 from the Yanks:

Derek Jeter’s salary trajectory was just as impressive as his on-field performances. Starting as a fresh-faced rookie in 1996 earning a modest $13,000, according to captainsblog.info, Jeter quickly proved his worth and his salary increased from $750,000 in 1997 to $5 million in 1998, after a successful arbitration hearing.

The 24-year Jeter at the time became arbitration-eligible for the first time that year. And in 1998, Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees were unable to reach a contract agreement. So, the case went into an arbitration hearing. In Jeter’s case, the team offered him a salary of $3.2 million for the season, while Jeter’s representatives argued for a salary of $5 million. Jeter ultimately was awarded his desired salary, which was $4.25 million more than his salary a year before.
