The New York Yankees dynasty from the late-1990s to the early 2000s, which won them four World Championships in five years, would never be remotely possible without the likes of the Core Four. Led by the likes of their eventual captain Derek Jeter, the Pinstripes’ Core Four consisted of pitchers Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera, and catcher Jorge Posada. The Core Four was much more than simply teammates, but a family inside the Bronx. Their fanbase extended across cities and they were the undoubted face of the Yankees. Now, a recent comparison between the Yankees’ core four and a star bunch from the Friars has left baseball fans angered.
The Core Four’s popularity doesn’t simply stem from their individual expertise or their bond. Their acquired love roots back to the Yankees dynasty. The Padres’ reported prospective Core Four consists of Juan Soto, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Fernando Tatis Jr. Without beating the bush, this Core Four has achieved nothing as a group in comparison to the Yanks’ Core Four. So, as fans said, maybe this nickname can be justified if the Padres head to their first World Series Ring with them.

Fans were prompt to point out that the four of them have essentially no secure future with the Friars. With Juan Soto heading for free agency and Fernando Tatis Jr. prospectively changing teams cause of his position in the outfield, this group could end much before it even starts.
Fans were not happy with this comparison and came up with hilarious alternate nicknames like “The San Diego Nets,” “good on paper,” and “rental four” amongst multiple other reactions. They also pointed out that the team would have to win their first World Series together to be remotely compared to the Core Four.
This is how fans reacted:
How about rental four, manny will be gone after one season, tatis also

The core four was coined because those four Yankees came up through MiLB together and played 17 years together in the Bronx.

Notably, all four Pinstripes’ Core Four members were drafted in the early 1990s, and won five World Series’ together across the 17 seasons they played together.
Without any argument, the Padres house among the strongest offensive lineups in the league. But do you think that the Padres’ Core Four can be remotely compared to the Jeter lead Yankees’ Core Four? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
