Shohei Ohtani hits different. The two-way slugger is likely on his way out of Anaheim as soon as winter arrives. But he has left the league with lasting memories in his Angels uniform, proving almost superhuman. One such incident happened in August 2023 at Citi Field, leaving a lasting impact on the Mets and their billionaire owner.

Shotime’s skills on both sides of the ball make him unique, but the Japanese sensation’s record-breaking ways make him extraordinary. Leading the AL in home runs despite missing almost all of September, Ohtani remains undefeated. One of those moonshots happened in Flushing to an awed crowd. Incidentally, the internet-viral moment turned into a successful ad campaign that is still working its magic.

When Shohei Ohtani hit a billboard featuring Coors Light at Citi Field, the crowds went wild. The knocked-off light panel showed a black square which was incidentally placed on the upper left corner of the beer can. The billboard operator had fun with The Angels slugger by telling him the organization was going to charge him for the damages. The next day, they apparently turned tame by requesting him to not break anything else.

Coors Light, meanwhile, took a viral baseball moment to turn it into a viral advertisement. In a clever marketing move, the $13.7 billion brand sold special cans with the exact look that Ohtani accidentally gave the feature at Citi Field. Despite being empty, the cans sold out at $17 each with an incredible “hits the spot” tagline. What’s even better is that these cans are now making a comeback on eBay to be sold for $100.

Baseball fans know they’re witnessing the making of history right now. There has never been anyone quite like Shohei Ohtani before, and it’s unlikely that anyone similar will emerge in the future. Every unique memorabilia associated with baseball’s unicorn cannot have a worth that can be measured in money for most.

Baseball Fans Love the Marketing Campaign

If watching Ohtani hit the ball so hard that it broke a light wasn’t enough, rewatching the clip shows the slugger trying to gauge the damage he did with a sheepish expression. A simple idea turned creative with “hits the spot” clearly went over well with the fanbase.
