The Houston Astros’ José Altuve is in the news again, albeit for some good reasons! Altuve has made a good offer to Houston, demanding Alex Bregman’s return, who remains a free agent. According to an MLB insider, Bob Nightengale, the Astros are in talks with Bregman, and the door is open for him to return. So, what is the offer?
Well, if Alex Bregman comes back to the Houston Astros, it will mean a change in position for the future Hall-of-Famer Jose Altuve. He currently plays at second base and has been quite successful with 7293 AB,.306 average, and 229 home runs. Although Altuve seems desperate for his teammate’s return, the Astros don’t look optimistic considering the two offers that Bregman has currently.

Alex Bregman, an All-Star free agent, is still a possibility for the Houston Astros. He has been a core player who led the team to success in the past decade, especially the World Series titles in 2017 and 2022. After becoming the free agent, while he seeks a minimum six-year, $200 million deal, the Astros offered him a six-year, $156 million deal, which he rejected. Now amidst the stalled talks, Jose Altuve has made a strange request to change his position for Alex Bregman. Does that make sense?
Well, during a podcast on January 24, a top MLB insider, Bob Nightengale, when asked about the Astros aligning their defence if Bregman comes back, said, “The easy thing would be Isaac Paredes moving to second base and Jose Altuve to left field.” Nightengale mentioned that someone has to be on the left field, and given that Bergman would play at the third base, it would be an easy way to mix and match whenever needed. But that’s not all!

Nightengale revealed that considering Alex Bregman‘s stellar record with the Astros, it might not be beneficial to move him to a different position. Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453, made 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and even won a Golden Glove award at the third base. Hence, his position remains fixed, although the Astros’ Scout, Jeremy Booth, recommends Padres moving to the left field and keeping Altuve in the second base. With the spring training to begin in less than a month, we will soon find out.

The Astros are in pursuit of some new names in their lineup
Amid the speculations building around the Astros-Bregman reunion and Jose Altuve making a positive call, the Houston Astros are in the hunt for some backup players. Among the top players on their list, there is Jorge Polanco, who is looking for a revamp. Polanco has been a switch-hitter who came off a knee surgery and made a career-low.651 OPS in the 118 games that he played with the Seattle Mariners. However, he managed to improve his performance and posted.724 OPS, hitting 11 of his 16 homers in just 63 games since July 2024. But that’s not all!
The Astros have had talks with another free agent, Arizona Diamondbacks’ Christian Walker. The 33-year-old first baseman is a three-time Golden Glove winner and has posted an impressive.800 OPS and hit 26 homers in 130 games, despite coming from an injury. He could also be a major addition to the team in case the Astros fail to have Bregman on board.

However, they would still like to wait for Alex Bregman to make a decision prior to making a next move. But that can’t happen for long. What’s your take on it? Do share your thoughts in the comment below.
