There seems to be no dearth of updates about who will land Alex Bregman. The newest addition to that is the Houston Astros, who are now in contention again. Bregman spent nine years with the Astros, and previously, he had rejected their six-year offer worth $156 million. Now, Bregman has a few teams running for him, including the Tigers and the Red Sox, who are reportedly ahead in the game. So, with the Astros further increasing the competition, the question arises: What made them interested again in Bregman with just a few weeks left till the spring season?

Even though the Astros have not offered a new deal, reportedly, they have not closed the door either; rather, they are open to discussions. So, while it was very likely that Bregman is going to join a new club this year, he might as well go back to Houston. Reportedly, both parties have already been in talks this week. Previously, when Bregman rejected the Astros’ offer worth $156 million, it was predicted that he would be looking for somewhat north of $200 million; so, it would be interesting to watch if the Astros are going beyond their initial offer to land Bregman.

The Houston Astros are keeping the door ajar for free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman to return, but are not optimistic,” said USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, reflecting that even with the Astros interested in Bregman, they are not very confident about landing him, nor are they desperate. Well, the Astros already signed first baseman Christian Walker for a three-year deal who can play the same role. Nevertheless, getting someone like Alex Bregman still holds a unique value to the team—that’s the aspect they are willing to leverage. But what if this deal doesn’t work out?

The Astros can still field a contending team even without Bregman, but getting someone who was part of them for nearly a decade and got them two World Series will be an added advantage. Alex Bregman ended his 2024 with 26 HRs and 75 RBIs, so getting the hottest free agent in the market will surely be a good value addition for any team.

What are Alex Bregman’s other options?

Reportedly, Alex Bregman has offers from the Tigers and Red Sox. Talks with the Tigers are currently at a standstill, and it is the Red Sox being the frontrunner in landing him. Even though it is not officially known about the deal offered by the Red Sox, Bregman’s association with the Red Sox manager Alex Cora is something that makes a strong case here. On the other hand, the Astros are pitching Bregman to 3B, which is his staple position, but he needs to go to 2B in the Red Sox. With Rafael Devers cemented his position in 3B for the Red Sox, Bregman needs to compromise, which is not the case if he chooses the Astros.

Will Alex Bregman choose loyalty to the Astros or a fresh start with the Red Sox?

Now, there is still no concrete information about where Bregman is going, so the Astros are possibly giving it a last try to see if he can be landed. It is also not clear if the Astros are ready to offer north of what they suggested initially or if Bregman will agree to this same deal. But with the Astros offering the same 3B to Bregman, chances are the team can still land him.
