2022 finished as a stunning season for Chicago White Sox baseman José Abreu, who batted 0.304/0.378 in the 157 games he featured in. After entering free agency, the baseman signed a whopping $58.5 million contract with the Houston Astros for three years. After signing this contract, he made sure to directly, but indirectly, rub it into the Astros’ ex-first baseman, Yuli Gurriel. Notably, Gurriel also became a free agent after winning the World Series with the Astros in 2022.

After signing a deal with Jose Abreu, questions about Gurriel’s future with the Astros made their way. However, since recent rumors suggest the Astros are still keen on signing Gurriel for another year; it would mean that the first-base position will be split between the two sluggers. However, Abreu made sure he let Yuli Gurriel know what he felt about potentially sharing the base with him.
How did fans react to Jose Abreu’s subtle dig at Yuli Gurriel?
Shortly after Jose Abreu signed a whopping $58.5 million deal with the Astros for three years, as reported by Chandler Rome, Abreu passed a straightforward but direct comment toward the Astros legend. And he spoke about how he has “utmost respect” for the ex-Astros baseman, however, he also is “hopeful” that his co-baseman is “able to stay in the major leagues.”
Through an interpreter, José Abreu says he has "the utmost respect" for Yuli Gurriel and says "hopefully he's able to stay in the major leagues."

Moreover, Brian McTaggart reported, “The signing of José Abreu would bring an end to Yuli Gurriel’s tenure as Houston’s full-time 1B. Gurriel is a free agent and the Astros have interest in bringing him back in a utility role.”
Fans stood divided after this comment. While some believe that it’s time Gurriel parted ways with the Astros, many others wanted him to stay on.
Here is how fans reacted to Jose Abreu’s message to Yuli Gurriel:
He needs to make one last run with the Astros and call it a career

There is absolutely no chance we just gave Jose Abreu $20 million per year to split time with Yuli Gurriel

I’m hopeful Yuli stays with the Astros! In my opinion Yuli is the better first baseman for defense.

In my opinión he is the most underrated player and I backed the team when when Yuli didn’t make ithe all-star team but he is one of the best in defense and is a Hoover at 1st! And his bay is like everyone else it’s on and off but when it matter he kills it postseason!

Definition of arrogant: having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities. Arrogant isn't the right word for this situation.

We need someone to replace Diaz. I’m sure a nice check would settle him staying since he loves playing here.

If the Astros decide to sign Gurriel for another season; the only potential outcome is the position being split between the two infielders.
