As the Dodgers celebrated their Game 5 victory over the Padres, popping champagne and relishing the moment, the focus turned to the pivotal moments that defined the series. One of those moments was owned by Teoscar Hernandez.

Many expected the Dodgers to crumble under the pressure, especially given their struggles in the previous two postseasons to respond in similar situations. However, this time, Los Angeles showed resilience especially Hernandez, who wasn’t about to let history repeat itself.

Teo’s big grand slam and career highs

After battling through the count and fouling off some tough pitches, Hernández stayed locked in and awaited his opportunity. When Michael King left that sweeper up in the zone, Hernández didn’t hesitate. He capitalized on the mistake, launching a grand slam to straightaway center field that electrified the crowd and cut the Dodgers’ deficit to just one run. According to MLB.com, second baseman Gavin Lux said, “He always comes through and he’s been huge. He’s an RBI machine.”

This time, Teoscar Hernández was determined to change the narrative. Facing a five-run deficit and stepping into the box with the bases loaded, he recognized the weight of the moment. Falling behind 0-2 in the count could easily rattle a hitter, but instead of panicking, Hernández remained composed. He focused on each pitch, knowing that one swing could turn the tide. The Dodgers went cold after that grand slam, going just 1-for-21 the rest of the way in Game 3. It’s wild to think that such a big moment could get overshadowed like that.

Teoscar Hernandez is like a hidden gem

Isn’t it interesting how Hernández always seems to go unnoticed? The Dodgers have been in the news this offseason, beginning with the historic 10-year, $700 million contract that they signed for Shohei Ohtani. Subsequently, they made a deal for Tyler Glasnow and promptly secured an extension for him. As you were about to give up, they signed Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a record-breaking $325 million contract.

Amid all this excitement, Hernández’s contributions often fly under the radar, but those who pay attention know how valuable he is. It’s almost like a hidden gem. As January came around, the Dodgers were already being dubbed a super team. With all the buzz surrounding their big-name signings, it’s easy to overlook that Hernández was one of their later, yet perhaps most impactful acquisitions. He signed a one-year contract with the Dodgers rather than a multi-year one with the Angels or Red Sox.

As the postseason rolled around, Teoscar Hernández continued to shine, hitting two key homers, including a clutch solo shot in the seventh inning on Friday. His goal? To show everyone he still had what it takes to perform at the highest level. And you know what? Mission accomplished.
