The New York Yankees – San Diego Padres negotiation drama has become one of the key discussions during this offseason. Even though both of these teams need to do the Juan Soto trade deal quite desperately, neither of them is willing to back down from their demands. The Yankees feel the Pads are being unreasonable, while the Friars think that the Bronx Bombers are being arrogant by acting like they’re the only ones in the market. Indeed, a huge dilemma.

Still, there is no denying that this is one of the deals that will benefit both teams. Perhaps that’s the reason why even after the talks are stalled right now, neither of them has given up on this deal. Why exactly do they want to stick to the landing even after this turbulent flight? The answer lies in their present condition.

Padres are seeking a substantial return from the Yankees in exchange for Juan Soto

The San Diego Padres want to lower their payroll. Trading Soto would free a lot of it, as he is expected to earn $33 million this year. But they are still strict in their trade requirements. One reason is Soto will leave a massive hole, but there’s more.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal discussed why the Pads are being strict. According to him, Soto’s free agency is acting like a double-edged sword. While it has made going after him a risk, it also means that he will be extra motivated to perform this year. That’s why the Pads consider his value to be immensely high.

On the other hand, the Friars have asked for Michael King, Clarke Schmidt, and Drew Thorpe in exchange for Soto. The Bombers have called this an extremely one-sided and even absurd demand. But the point is, even the Yankees need Juan Soto. Their last season was disappointing, to say the least. They lack quality left-handers and outfielders. Incidentally, Soto fulfills both gaps.

Perhaps that’s why Rosenthal said, “The Padres need to trade Soto as they try to cut payroll before moving onto other pursuits. The Yankees need Soto as they try to rebound from what general manager Brian Cashman has called a “disaster” of a season.” However, the bigger picture here is, how will this situation meet its resolution?

How might the issue be addressed?

The solution is simple, the Yankees will have to give at least one of the above-named players. The Pads have included their outfield Trent Grisham in this trade. This will provide some depth to the Bronx outfield. It’ll help them at least till their rookie Jasson Dominguez returns from his injury. The teams will have to compromise if they want to do this deal.

Even though the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners are in the race as well, the Yankees remain favorites. They’ll have to work hard to secure this deal or else their fanbase will have another reason to be furious at the management.
