As Alex Bregman’s trade talks pick up steam, the Boston Red Sox are at a crossroads. The Red Sox’s infield situation remains unclear as the team’s star third baseman, Rafael Devers, refuses to move. The fans are divided: does the squad need to stay loyal to its core or take a risk? Even with the 3B drama making headlines every day, there’s one person unfazed by the ruckus, Red Sox legend, David Ortiz. Big Papi believes it’ll be okay, and the source of his belief? His admiration for Alex Cora. But can the Red Sox weather this storm with admiration alone?

With 200 home runs and a lifetime batting average of .279, Rafael Devers, a two-time All-Star, has no intention of giving up third base. Meanwhile, Alex Bregman, also a star third baseman, had a .768 OPS the previous season and has been the subject of intense trade rumors. While fans remain torn, David Ortiz backs the team, Devers and Cora. And on the other hand, Alex Cora chooses to ignore the commotion since he is concerned with the bigger picture of this all.

While many have criticized Cora in between the 3B drama, Big Papi, David Ortiz commended Cora’s leadership skills. He believes Cora is the best person in the face of roster uncertainty, stating, “He understands player feelings“. Additionally, Ortiz has faith in Alex Cora to keep the team together, saying, “I promise you that we’re going to be fine, we had the best manager in baseball, which is Alex Cora.” Ortiz referred to Cora as the best guy to handle challenging circumstances. Adding on, he even expressed he wished he had played under Cora. When egos collide and crucial decisions need to be made, Cora’s leadership will be tested. Can he handle this critical circumstance without compromising the team’s cohesiveness?

Alex Cora’s leadership and connection

Ortiz’s respect for Alex Cora isn’t just tied to the Devers-Bregman debate—it comes from his belief in the  manager’s ability to bring a clubhouse together. Cora has a history of successfully leading elite players. In 2018, he balanced a dynamic roster with stars like Mookie Betts and seasoned players, like J.D. Martinez, leading the Red Sox to a 108-win season and a World Series championship. And again in 2021, he demonstrated his leadership as Boston advanced to the ALCS despite of low expectations. In contrast to managers who allow egos to clash, Cora makes sure that every player feels appreciated. And that’s how Boston has remained competitive despite 3B drama.

Ortiz didn’t just praise Cora for his strategic decisions but also his leadership. Alex Cora has navigated through front-office decisions while keeping the team united. In 2022, even though Boston finished last in the AL East, players still praised Cora’s interaction and accountability. As the Red Sox weigh their future at third base, Cora’s ability to manage the clubhouse’s chemistry could make all the difference. In a league where talent alone is not enough, Cora’s ability to, “understand player feelings” could be Boston’s hidden weapon this season.
