Blake Snell has never been the guy to meet expectations. Rarely has MLB seen a pitcher who is as surprising as Snellzilla. One moment he’s struggling to finish 6 innings, and the next, he pitches a ridiculous no-hitter. The San Francisco Giants ace entered this season as a Cy Young winner but was nowhere near his level. However, come All-Star break, he became vintage Snell. Although, even then, Snell didn’t stop surprising people – this time, the watchers were his teammates.
Logan Webb has perhaps witnessed Blake Snell’s brilliance from the closest place. The moment Snellzilla came to the Giants, it was obvious that this partnership was one to look out for. However, even Webb was left amazed at the way Blake Snell celebrated or actually didn’t celebrate his no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds in August. Imagine, your entire teammates celebrating while you’re playing video games. That’s exactly what Snell did.
“We hung out at the hotel,” Webb said to Chris Rose about the team celebrating Snell’s no-hitter. “Blake didn’t even hang out. I think he was playing 2K or something, that’s just Blake.” However, the interesting detail came later when Webb revealed Snell’s demeanor while playing video games. Like most gamers, Snellzilla is a big trash-talker, in fact, he may love it a little too much.

“He likes getting on there and talking s–t to the kids that he beats on 2K and MLB the Show,” Webb revealed. But did Snell’s absence affect his Giants teammates? Not at all. “Nobody cared if he was there or not,” Webb revealed. The 2x Cy Young winner’s passion for video gaming has always been known. In fact, according to Snell – it’s one of the reasons why teams stayed away from him during the offseason. They worried whether he was too committed to gaming. But while that may have scared teams, Webb doesn’t want the Giants to let go of Snell.
Logan Webb wants to do all he can to retain Blake Snell
The conversation inevitably shifted to Blake Snell’s future. While the ace has a multi-year deal with the Bay Bombers, he’s expected to opt out after this season. Though, the Giants have given an extension to Matt Chapman, Snell’s next step is rather difficult to predict. However, it doesn’t mean that Logan Webb won’t try his best to keep Snell in Bay Area. He revealed as much to Chris Rose.

Blake Snell's no-hitter reaction: Cool as a cucumber or just plain indifferent?

“I’m going to do everything, I hope they do what they did with (Chapman) and start conversations now so we’re not bidding against some other teams,” Webb noted. The pitcher noted that multiple teams in their divisions would want to have a pitcher of Snell’s quality in their squad. Perhaps that’s why the San Francisco Giants need to start their talks early. Because more competition will only weaken their position – something they’ve experienced a lot this decade (remember Aaron Judge?).
“It’s been awesome to watch and he’s one of my favorite teammates so hopefully we do everything we can to get him back,” Webb said. That’s quite hopeful of Logan Webb but it is understandable. After a rough start, Blake Snell is currently on a tear. Though the Giants’ postseason dreams are basically over, they know with Snell their future is bright. But can they re-sign him? Let us know in the comments.
