When will Anthony Rendon play? When can the fans witness Rendon playing a full season? That seems unlikely now as he is set to undergo hip surgery, which will keep him away from action for now. The discussion around Rendon about his willingness to play is long-going, but now it seems stakeholders are moving away from him. Why not, when he has yet to play a full season since the Angels signed him in 2020?
As ridiculous as it sounds, the Angels who got him for $245 million have yet to get a full-year service from Anthony Rendon. With younger players coming to the circuit and better free agents available, the Angels are now rightly getting called to release Rendon for good. On the other hand, his repeated absence from the field is now putting his commitment in question. The insiders are wondering if Rendon is committed enough to continue his baseball career. So what’s wrong with Rendon, and going by the situation, what lies ahead for him?

Injury-ridden history Anthony Rendon
Ted Williams, a WWII-era player who took a break from the MLB circuit to fight the Nazis, comprises better figures in five years compared to what Rendon has done with the Angels. That’s how the stats for Rendon stand currently and ultimately a loss case for a big-budget buy of the Angels. Till 2019, Anthony Rendon was a big name in MLB when his 6.7 WAR was second only to the legend Mike Trout’s 8.4. That figure was enough for the Angels to offer big, but it went south for Rendon afterwards. In five years with the Angels, Rendon played 257 games. That’s 25% of the total games he was expected to play!
The above numbers and Rendon’s far-stretched hiatus from the field are enough for the insiders to call for his release. This further got amplified after his 2025 season got delayed due to his hip surgery. “I don’t want to waste my time or Voice or energy, I don’t think we’ll ever see him play a game again … and keep paying them that’s fine they can do that I would release the player and just move on,” said MLB insider Jim Bowden. Continuing with Rendon has no point anymore, and with his 2025 return still on stake, it’s entirely a loss case for the Angels. More than his injury, it is the dedication and commitment of Anthony Rendon that is getting questioned now!

What lies ahead for Rendon?
Well, Rendon is not available for an indefinite period but going by this situation, what would be his future? Anthony Rendon still has two years left to play with the Angels, but it is unlikely that they would like to continue with him at 3B going further. His injury-ridden seasons and inability to hit a single home run since July 2023 make a strong case for the Angels to look for alternatives. However, finding a trading partner for Anthony Rendon seems impossible now! Like, who on earth would take a player with such figures?
As per the latest rumors, Rendon is considering taking retirement. But he still owes $38 million from his remaining two years with the Angels that need to be sacrificed then. The better alternative will be to get differentiated payments from the team over a while if the Angels front office approves. Considering Rendon is not offering any value to the team, they should not have any issue offering the same. For the fans, Anthony Rendon has no hope anymore, and it’s time to move on from him and get a better player on the team.
It is just about time that the Angels announce partition with Rendon by any means possible, and unfortunately, this might be the end of the talented slugger.
