MLB veteran Derek Jeter is lauded as one of the best players to have graced the game of baseball in recent decades. An undeniable talent, he changed the course of the New York Yankees’ history in many ways. A five-time World Series champ and captain of the team for eleven years, Jeter is a respected name in the sports world. One of the main reasons most fans admire him is that he was always all about the sport. Nothing else, nothing more.

Never one to open up about himself, Jeter would always rather talk about baseball. More than the media or MLB analysts, Derek Jeter was perhaps his own biggest critic. Now that he’s retired, he often looks back on some of those times with humor and lighter feelings. When ESPN’s docuseries The Captain was released in 2022, it gave more insight into what went on behind the scenes during some of the biggest moments of his life. And both Derek and his wife, Hannah, talked about a particularly grueling time in his career that they both think is rather funny now.

Derek Jeter once fell off a scooter inside his house
The 2012 post-season did not go well for the Captain. In the very first ALCS game in the last season, he broke his ankle and had to be escorted off the field with help. Now, if there’s one thing fans know about the Hall of Famer is that he always had a winning mentality. Even though injuries are part of an athlete’s life, Jeter wasn’t having it. He once described that year as the worst off-season because he couldn’t even walk for the longest time, much less play baseball.

To combat his mobility problem, he used a scooter to move around the house. Now that’s something that sounds fun to most people, but then again, most people are not Derek Jeter. In the docuseries, his wife Hannah shared, “I remember them giving him a scooter. He hated the scooter – he actually fell off the scooter one time. He tripped on a rug in our house…that offseason was the worst.”

What does the former Yankees captain remember about that period?
It was undoubtedly a terrible time in his life. The scooter just made it worse, apparently. In the same episode of ESPN’s The Captain, Jeter further expanded on what Hannah had said.
