New York Yankees have finally settled with all of their arbitration-eligible players. The salary settlement was done for all but one player before the January 13th deadline. And that player was Gleyber Torres. Earlier, Torres and the Yanks failed to come to an agreement on over $500,000 and were headed to arbitration. But as the Yankees have a history of avoiding arbitration hearings wherever possible, Torres was also saved.

The 26-year-old hit 24 homers and totaled 76 RBIs with a .761 OPS in 2022. The two-time AL All-Starer has definitely proven his worth in a career spanning five seasons so far. The Yankees will now have to decide whether Torres is worth holding on to after the 2023 season or if they want to trade him for different players. Even though Torres is yet to prove his worth in the Bronx, the Yankees fans are happy that Torres’ presence in the clubhouse might bring some luck to them.

When the official Yankees page tweeted out the news about Torres, fans had mixed reactions. While it’s always a toss-up to see how a player will be received within the team and by fans, Torres has had a relatively positive reaction so far. Of course, there are people who would rather see him traded for shortstop prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza. But others think the second baseman is worth being a Yankee.

Some Twitter users also seemed to think Torres would do better at positions like third baseman since he only appeared on second base for 19 games in the 2020-2021 season.

For the last two decades, the Pinstripes have had just three arbitration hearings. If a player’s requested salary is within the market value, then the Yankees generally settle with the team member. However, three pitchers made it to court with the Yankees.

Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera lost in an arbitration hearing in 2000 where the arbitrators favored the Yankees’ $7.25 million rather than his $9.25 million. The team won in another two hearings in 2008 and 2017, with Chien-Ming Wang and Dellin Betances, respectively. Even though the arbitrators have favored the Bronx Bombers previously, the managers seem to prefer settling in private.
