The New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge’s free agency is one for the history books. Keeping fans on the edge until the last moment while considering offers from teams such as the San Francisco Giants, Judge returned to where he belonged. But he did not do so without leaving a six foot seven inches gaping hole in the Giants’ management. As the Yankees took their sweet time to offer Judge the contract he deserved, the reigning AL MVP took a brief look at the offers from the San Diego Padres and the Giants. As he did so, he even visited the cities with his wife and sat down for meetings with both teams. While we know that the Yankees got Judge, the question is, how close the Giants were to getting his signature?

Most recently, the Giants’ president of baseball operations sat down with two esteemed journalists and talked about what the signing of Judge meant to them.

Despite the rumors that said Juge was, in fact, going to the Giants, All Rise knew in his heart that he wanted to be back in the Yankee Stadium wearing pinstripes. Therefore, when the Yankees offered Aaron the same contract as the Giants, $360 million for nine years, he chose to come back home.

Notably, the Giants were unhappy with this move. But somehow, they knew that the reigning AL MVP was bound to return to the Bronx. And Giants president Farhan Zaidi admitted this when he sat down with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman on “The Show” podcast.

According to Zaidi, “I don’t know if it’s a coping mechanism, but I never really believed he was gonna sign here. At the end of the day, I think he gave us real consideration. He flew out here with his wife, spent a weekend with us, spent a lot of time with us. And I know there’s been talk that it was leverage and this and that, but I believe the interest was sincere.”

At the time of Judge’s free agency, a lot of buzz went around that said the Giants were the top favorites. But in the end, it all came down to getting the Yanks to offer Judge a reasonable contract. Even so, Zaidi believes that Aaron gave them real consideration.

How has Judge done with the Yankees so far?

The Yanks’ captain started off the season with a bang. But ended up on the injured list for a few days. From the moment he returned, Judge again started hitting home runs and had a total of 19 with 40 RBI. Unfortunately, he once again ended up on the injured list earlier this month and has been in recovery ever since.

His absence from the team is visible in how they are playing without him around. Most recently, the Yankees suffered a terrible loss against the Oakland Athletics. The A’s currently have 21 wins and 60 losses in their corner, the lowest in the entire league.
