While the market for Blake Snell is seemingly thinning, the opposite is happening with Jordan Montgomery. The World Series winner is gradually seeing more teams coming for him. With the New York Yankees already seemingly ahead in the race, are the San Francisco Giants looking to stop the Bronx juggernaut?

Although the Giants are firmly linked with Snell, it looks like their need for a frontline starter is big enough to keep their options open. But with the Bay Bombers ready to invest more time in Monty, can it mean trouble for their Snell links?

The MLB Network recently interviewed New York Post’s Jon Heyman. While talking about the remaining pitching free agents, he revealed the list of suitors for Jordan Montgomery. The list involved the usual Yankees, the Mets, the Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Los Angeles Angels. The most interesting name, however, was of the Bay Bombers.

Even though the Giants have a pretty good lineup, they have a huge shortage of quality lefties on their team. Montgomery, who has repeatedly proven that he’s an excellent no. 3 or 4, would be an excellent addition to the Giants squad. Also, unlike Snell, Monty has been a consistent performer throughout his career.

In the Yankees, Montgomery was a trustworthy mid-rotation pitcher. Though he never quite rose to become the ace, Monty’s performances were a big reason for the Bronx Squad’s stability. But things improved for him once the Yankees traded him away to the St. Louis Cardinals, who in turn traded him to the Texas Rangers. By then Monty had turned into an unrecognizable talent, with his peak coming in the ALCS where his three appearances had a collective 1.29 ERA!

Perhaps that’s the reason why the Giants want him. Apart from Logan Webb, the Bay Bombers are filled with talented prospects. There’s a huge need for an experienced and aggressive pitcher, and the current Monty fits the bill. With the links just emerging, could this mean trouble for the Snell links?

The Blake Snell talks are still on

While the underlying stats of both Montgomery and Snell weren’t as good as their overall performances, they were good enough to give a picture of what one can expect from them. The biggest difference between the two, however, is that while Monty is a serviceable no.3, Snell is a well-proven ace.

While Snell’s inconsistencies are known to many, at his best, he’s a league leader. The Giants know this as well and want a star partner for Webb. Having a one-two punch consisting of the Cy Young winner and finalist looks irresistible. As a result, the talks are still going strong between Snell and Giants, while Montgomery continues to enjoy the attention that he’s receiving.
