The San Francisco Giants are essentially stepping into a new era this upcoming season. And much of it is because of Buster Posey. After being crowned as the president of baseball operations, he sprung into action to bring change. They have been busy this off-season signing big players Willy Adames and even three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander from the free-agent market. However, they didn’t just stop there. They also signed Matt Chapman and Logan Webb to long-term extensions.
All these big names on paper are to create a culture, a new identity in the clubhouse. Posey is on a mission to build a strong core, so the rest of the team is inspired. Having veterans like Verlander and Chapman and the rest are the ones who can drive in the spirit. And it seems like it’s not just the vision of the president alone. Even Chapman seems to be fully on board as this new era begins.

Matt Chapman’s season has been pretty memorable. He signed a six-year, $151 million extension with the Giants. And later als0 welcomed his daughter Gia to the world. Then he snagged his fifth Gold Glove. And recently, he was caught in a wholesome moment signing on a dog’s jersey at an event. He is surely a star even for the furries! However, while he has achieved plenty of milestones, his head is laser-focused on the team’s success.
The proof? Well, Posey had approached Chapman about a potential switch to shortstop in case the team landed Ha-Seong Kim. And Chapman didn’t hesitate to say, “I said I’ll do whatever the team needs me to do, no problem.” He also mentioned that he appreciates the open line of communication he has with Buster Posey. A quality he said he never saw with other presidents or other GMs.

But then the Giants passed on signing Kim. Instead, they got Willy Adames with a record-breaking deal. And Chapman was thrilled, “Having him, it just gives us another guy in our lineup that gives us a better chance to win.” In fact, they even trained together earlier. And with this in focus, Chapman has one clear agenda in his mind: make it to the playoffs.
“Make the playoffs. That’s my goal. Personally, I have goals, always want to strive to improve, and have really good seasons, but for me, I’ve got the contract behind me. I don’t have to worry about that; I just want to go to the playoffs. I want to win and continue to build on what I feel like we started last year and build something that’s going to be continuous winning and something special,” said Matt Chapman. Well, the San Francisco Giants fans are waiting for these promises to come true.
Chapman shrugs off Roki Sasaki’s signing miss
Roki Sasaki was easily one of the biggest catches this off-season. An international bonus signing for a generational player. It’s a rare find. And given that Joel Wolfe, Sasaki’s agent, had mentioned that the flamethrower wanted a low-key, less-media-attention-heavy team. Hence, teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and even the San Francisco Giants jumped in on the bandwagon. However, Sasaki finally ended up joining where most suspected he would—the LA Dodgers. But while some are disgruntled, Maat Chapman is not losing sleep over it.

Chapman told the Mercury News, “Nothing’s guaranteed. You have to go out there and do it. On paper, your team can look great. Obviously, they’re probably the favorites, but that doesn’t change anything for us. Our goals are to win the division and to make the playoffs.” It’s a mindset that Giants fans should embrace.

It is true that the Los Angeles Dodgers now have a crazy pitching lineup. Blake Snell, a former Giants star, along with Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, and more are now playing in Hollywood. Yet, Chapman isn’t intimidated by the flashy signings. After all, in the end, hard work and execution are what matter. Right now it seems like the Giants are still being connected to players like Pete Alonso. Whose future with the New York Mets seems less than likely. Also, they are connected to Marcus Stroman and Luis Castillo, so it remains to be seen if more big moves are still remaining.
