At the Bronx, it’s chants of “We want Weaver” echoing now. And the reason behind this is struggling Yankees’ closer, Devin Williams. It was really difficult to understand which one was louder on Friday. Was it Williams giving away a two-run double to Alejandro Kirk or the chorus of boos that continued until he left the mound? So, what really happened that turned the game into a flashpoint for fans’ fury?

The New York Yankees had a one-run lead, but unfortunately, as Williams came to the mound, there was a turn of events. Guess what? That lead quickly turned into a deficit, as the three Toronto Blue Jays’ batters made their way to the base, well supported by Alejandro Kirk’s heroics. Now, fans are angry—some even demanding his exit from the Yankees.

But Devin Williams is not bitter. When asked about the crowd wanting Weaver on the mound, he said, “Everyone has their opinions.” It doesn’t seem to bother him, as Williams came up with a bizarre response, saying, “I don’t have an opinion on it.” With only two hits, one hit-by-pitch, and without any strikeouts, Williams’ performance was dismal, to be precise. The Yankees never really had a closer problem, but with Williams derailing the Yankees in their 4-2 loss against the Blue Jays, in front of 46,081 people, it was sheer disappointment. One of the fans expressed his disappointment, commenting, “Get rid of him.”

Although Devin Williams left the mound soon after that, manager Aaron Boone brought Mark Leiter Jr. and not Luke Weaver from the bullpen. Unfortunately, the game was out of their hands till then. Leiter Jr. gave away an RBI single to the Blue Jays’ Addison Barger, eventually leading to a loss in the Bronx. The Toronto Blue Jays finally managed to break their five-game consecutive loss streak as well.

However, does Devin Williams deserve such an amount of hate, considering that he has an excellent 11.25 ERA across his ten appearances as a closer? Manager Aaron Boone, when asked about whether they will let go of Williams from the closer role, said, “We’ll see. We’ll kind of talk through this stuff. This is raw right now. We want to do everything we can to get him right because we know how good he is and how valuable he is going to be to us.

But the fans are like, “We simply don’t want to see Williams again.” That’s how hard it is to shake off the loss for the Yankees right now.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Devin Williams' time with the Yankees over, or can he bounce back from this slump?

Yankees star’s reaction after their loss sparks frenzy among the fans

The reaction of Devin Williams spread like a wildfire, and fans started flooding social media with their criticism. Fans weren’t just angry. They just do not want to see Devin Williams as a closer again. “Get rid of him. The dislike of him is not going to get easier for him because we don’t trust him. And one save is not going to do it. His attitude sucks.” Despite holding on to the closer title, Williams’ performance has been quite moderate this season, as he went 0-2 with 10 G, 8.0 IP, and made only 8 strikeouts. Moreover, his don’t-care attitude while calling out, “Everyone has their opinions,” hasn’t been well received by the fans either.

Then came more criticism: “mentally weak. Just tell the truth and say, “Yes, it sucks. I want to help this team win. I want to play well, but I’m just not rn. I’ll continue to work hard and turn this around.” Do teams just not have PR people anymore that tell these players what to say?” Clearly not happy with the response of Devin Williams. Pointing out the mistake, the X user demanded that his PR guide, Williams, confess his own fault and try to do better, rather than paying attention to anyone else.

He doesn’t want to be here.” It’s not something new—even in the past, fans have raised questions on whether Williams wants to be with the Yankees or not. He has been quite inconsistent, as he struggled due to not having enough control over the swing-and-miss stuff. Not to mention that his fastballs and changeups have been worse; adding to his failure to locate the pitches accurately.

Another fan wrote, “Man up or shut up; play like a top 2 closer,” demanding Williams play as a true closer and show his best. It’s just four weeks into the 2025 season, and the Yankees’ 30-year-old closer hasn’t found the rhythm yet, despite having a unique “Airbender” changeup. His recent struggles have turned the ninth inning into a nightmare for the Yankees, which requires quick intervention.

A sensible comment came from an X user, who wrote, “He really doesn’t give the vibe he wants to be here. Maybe he didn’t. Maybe it’s just getting to him. Hope it works out.” And it’s true. He surely doesn’t seem to be passionate about the game. The main focus in the ninth inning was to protect the 2-1 lead; Williams failed massively, falling behind every batter he faced and failing to make any significant impact.
