When one looks at Gerrit Cole on the field, it becomes easy to guess why he remains one of the most beloved baseball players. Together with his wife Amy, the Cy Young winner has taken on a mission to heal the world one step at a time. 

A famous wine aficionado, Cole has used his love for wines as a tool to generate charity for those who need it the most. That’s just the first step, though, as the New York Yankees ace has found numerous other ways through which he has changed the lives of children across the country. So here is the journey of the one Gerrit Cole – the great player and an even greater person. The man who uses his fame in the best possible way.

“Uncork for a Cause”: All to know about charity event held by Gerrit Cole and his wife 

Apart from baseball, perhaps the greatest pastime of Gerrit Cole is making different types of wines. A passion passed down by his father, Cole has always been vocal about his love for the alcoholic drink. So when he got the opportunity to host the “Uncork for a Cause” event, it was obvious that he would sign up. Together with his wife Amy, Cole has hosted this event three times.

“Uncork for a Cause” is a charity wine event where exotic wines, menus, and drinks are served. All of this leads to an auction or other such events, the proceeds of which go to various philanthropic organizations. Cole hosted this event with Amy in 2016, 2017 when he was in the Pittsburgh Pirates, and in 2019 when he was in the Houston Astros. 

Through these events, the pitcher supported the Pirates Charity as well as The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh. These organizations help create youth programs related to their physical and educational development. Simultaneously they also benefit veterans, military families, and those suffering from cancer. But this was just the beginning as both Gerrit and Amy knew they wanted to be more involved in community service.

“When I first signed my contract with New York, that was the first time where we took our charitable activities and tried to … turn it into something that was going to last for a long time,” Cole said to the New Port Beach Magazine in 2023. Initially, the couple made some donations but then they realized that they had to be more hands-on with their philanthropic work. 

So in 2020, the Gerrit and Amy Cole Foundation was founded. With Amy Cole acting as the President, the initial objective of the foundation was to help families in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gradually the couple saw the org taking its final shape.

Created with a mission to help children around the country get proper education and nutrition, the foundation aims to eliminate hunger and provide proper athletic as well as artistic opportunities to talented youth. Through this Cole aims to improve the life of children who could’ve otherwise got lost behind a sea of crowds. The couple started seeing the effects of their work from the pandemic era.

Food for thought: Gerrit Cole’s valuable contribution during the pandemic 

 “I felt really fortunate and grateful to be able to help out people in our communities, especially in New York with COVID, and just being able to watch that evolve over the last couple years … has been really awesome and really rewarding.” Gerrit Cole said, reminiscing about how things shaped up for his foundation. 

During the pandemic, Gerrit and Amy Cole became active in community service. They supported “Direct Relief”, an organization that assisted health workers who were responding to the Covid 19 pandemic. All of the donations were made under the Gerrit and Amy Cole Foundation.  

Simultaneously, Cole donated to various food banks to ensure that people in New York didn’t go to sleep hungry. All of this gave Cole a perspective on human struggles and made his resolve to support fellow humans even stronger. Even though the pandemic cooled down, the zeal with the Cole couple remained the same. Gradually they started seeing the impact of their good work.

Impacting lives: How Gerrit Cole has changed many futures 

The couple first understood the impact of their work in a Bronx school. After the 2020 lockdown, the school was struggling with attendance, which led to Cole getting involved. With the couple introducing incentives for attending the school, gradually the numbers started to improve. Eventually, the school got 100% graduation which was “incredible” according to Amy Cole.

The couple regularly hosts culinary and musical experiences to foster charity in their foundation. In an event on Feb 4, 2023, at The Ranch at Laguna Beach – the couple managed to raise over $400,000. The objective of this event was to find more funding for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. The Cole couple has a deep-rooted connection with cancer research. This is because of their close friends Mike and Joanna Irwin losing their 8-month-old son to undiagnosed cancer.

With Amy Cole working full-time as the President, the Foundation is just getting started. With the couple’s passion for service growing stronger every day, they aim to ensure every child gets proper care in the States. In the end, while on the field Gerrit Cole is an icon, off the field he’s nothing short of a hero.
