In a terrible 2023 season, the New York Yankees could at least count on pitching. Amid a bullpen plagued by injuries was ace Gerrit Cole, who won the Cy Young for his efforts. This offseason, the team can solve that problem by not just adding depth to their bullpen but also major free agents to create a star-studded list of pitchers. What does that dream roster look like?

The Yankees already have star pitchers like Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon. Though Rodon had big injury problems, the team is hoping that he’ll make a strong comeback. So what if these two are joined by pitchers like Jordan Montgomery and Yoshinobu Yamamoto? Just how dangerous will the Bronx Bombers look then?

While some insiders have reported that the Yankees are looking to stay low-key in the current market, things could change. Especially as they are linked with a number of superstars. If things fall in their favor and Brian Cashman finally makes the right moves, 2024 could look a lot different.

While Gerrit Cole will certainly remain the numero uno, other starting spots can get shuffled. Montgomery in 2023 had an ERA of 3.20 and with the Rangers, which later went down to 2.79. With one of the best curveballs in the league, he will surely look to become a regular starter.

The same will be the case with Yamamoto. He’s already one of the greatest pitchers in the history of NPB and has the necessary credentials to demand such attention. Yossy’s impressive fastballs will give a big variety to the Yankees’ defense. But even within the team, they have some impressive talents waiting to challenge for a big role.

Clarke Shmidt proved to be an able partner for Cole and had 149 strikeouts, but the biggest breakthrough is credited to Michael King. The 28-year-old had an ERA of 2.75 and recorded 127 strikeouts. The Yankees have no shortage of talent in their roster, so why the pursuit?

Why do the Yankees want more pitchers?

First with injury and then bad form, Carlos Rodon struggled a lot during 2023. The Pinstripes want to ensure that there is a proper backup if something similar happens next season.

Another major reason is that they are likely letting Luis Severino go. The Dominican pitcher has been struggling for a few years now. But his departure opens up a spot in their bullpen that needs urgent filling.
