In MLB history, very few players can be said to have massive talent. Alex Rodriguez was one of them. Because of it, teams were always in the line to sign the shortstop. It brought a lot of competition too, which impacted many deals. The Boston Red Sox were one of those which stumbled upon the chance of giving Rodriguez their number.

It read, “Steinbrenner was head over heels happy that spring about getting Rodriguez?especially after the Yankees got him only after the Red Sox blew their chance.”

Notably, the players association did not allow the Red Sox to renegotiate a changed contract. The Yankees pitched on the opportunity, the authors put in as “Steinbrenner was walking around as flush as the high school boy who asks the prettiest girl in class to the prom, and she said yes.”
