Francisco Lindor, the New York Mets superstar, has been snubbed from the list of Gold Glove finalists. This is the same shortstop who not only has been one of the star offensive players of the season but is likely to also finish second in the NL MVP race—right behind Shohei Ohtani. Despite an exceptional season like his, he was ignored. The process of Gold Glove voting is what adds more to that ‘baffle’ element. Seventy-five percent of the votes come from managers and coaches.
With up to six coaches from each team contributing, the remaining 25% is based on the SABR Defensive Index, an advanced metric that’s supposed to favor players like Lindor. Yet, the shortstop didn’t make the cut. The manager of the Mets was shocked to hear that his star player didn’t make it to the list. On Tuesday, the Rawlings announced the finalists. And looking at the result with Lindor nowhere to be seen, both fans and analysts were left scratching their heads. How could someone of Lindor’s caliber be overlooked by anyone?
Lindor’s offensive and defensive games were both remarkable in the regular season. The 30-year-old also tallied 16 outs, ranking fourth in the NL. Making his omission a big surprise, even to Carlos Mendoza. He wasn’t just surprised but also displeased upon learning that Lindor didn’t even make it to the finalist list. As per the NY Post, Carlos Mendoza said, “He’s an elite defender. I was shocked that he wasn’t even in the finals.”

For him, Lindor is a stellar defense star for his team who deserves all the limelight. However, Mendoza did mention that Lindor is far from wanting or looking for titles, and Carlos Mendoza isn’t wrong to be shell-shocked by Lindor not making it to the finalists. His stats are spotless, with a fWar of 7.8 and 385 assists; plus, Lindor also made just 12 errors the entire season. Not to forget that the entire time, he has been a popular player, talked about by most; so, his not making it is a definite head-scratcher for many. But Lindor isn’t complaining!

However, even when the fans can’t stop yapping about it, Lindor is calm and composed. He said, “I had a good defensive year, but I guess there’s other players that had a better defensive year than me.” With this, Lindor just dismissed all the talks, but everyone knows he deserves to be on the list. However, for now, Francisco is moving on, although he mentioned hoping to get a chance next year.

One thing is for sure: Lindor is an ‘under-rated’ star. But it’s refreshing to see that accolades are not of much value to him, he just has one goal in mind right now and that is winning the World Series. “At the end of the day, I’m trying to win a World Series. I’m trying to make it to the World Series and then win it,” Francisco Lindor noted about his goals.
Meanwhile, the ones who will move ahead are Masyn Winn, Dansby Swanson, and Ezequiel Tovar. And who knows, we might see the fire within Lindor light up more after this snub! And that’s something the New York Mets are waiting for, don’t you agree? Share your take below.
