It’s no secret that the New York Mets have been struggling this season on the plate. After a rough start with six shutouts, things do not seem to be improving. In fact, their recent 5-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds counts as the 7th, which is just one less than 2022’s total tally. With some players serving time on the injured list, the woes seem never-ending.

And when asked about the team’s dismal stats this year, the Mets’ star shortstop Francisco Lindor had a surprising response. Notably, ever since signing a 10-year $341 million contract with the Mets in 2021, Lindor has not exactly been a fan favorite. This recent interaction with the press is not helping matters either.

Not everyone has the ability to give eloquent speeches in front of the camera. For Mets fans, Lindor firmly falls in that category and his latest answers are only proving them right. When asked about the team having 7 shutouts this season already as compared to 2022’s total of 8, the shortstop didn’t quite know what to say.

“Hats off to all the teams that shut us out. That’s all I got. I wish I had the answer for that one,” was his answer. It’s especially painful for fans to watch because, in 2022, the Mets recorded their first 100-win season since 1988. The solid performance by players was expected to continue this season, not take a U-turn in the opposite direction.

The Buch Showalter-led team currently stands second from the bottom in their division standings. In fact, the next game they’re set to play is with the only team below them, the Washington Nationals.

Baseball fans are livid at Lindor’s response

Post-game interviews can be equally entertaining or frustrating to watch, especially if the player is on the losing team. Mets fans are certainly not happy with how Lindor chose to resolve things.

Some want him to take responsibility for the team’s recent performance.

One pointed out how Lindor is a player and not a PR executive, so he can’t be expected to give satisfying answers.

One even suggested an alternative answer that could have settled fans.
