Offseason bets on MLB teams have yet to age well. The New York Mets have given one of the most disappointing performances of the season, despite the talent that populates it. But amid all the disappointment, the team’s star shortstop gave fans a sweet discussion moment.

Given how much owner Steve Cohen spent on each contract, fans had expected a performance aimed at winning the World Series. However, it would be a wonder if the 46-52 Mets even make it to the playoffs. Meanwhile, fans are mooning over Francisco Lindor.

The Mets are currently on the road playing the Boston Red Sox in a series at Fenway Park. Although Boston has been struggling this season, too, they are holding their own against New York. And amid the poor display, a wholesome moment took place off the field, melting the hearts of baseball fans.

In a clip shared by SNY Mets, Lindor walks up to a little girl in the stands. She’s clutching her father, who’s wearing a Red Sox cap. The shortstop offers her a signed ball, “I’m trying to make you a Mets fan.” Immediately sensing her shyness as she hides her face, Lindor tries to ask her name.

Although she seems reluctant to lift her face from her dad’s shoulder, the Mets player tries to talk to her sweetly. “I get it. It makes sense,” he says. His parting message? “Be the best Red Sox fan ever.” The thoughtful gesture will probably become a lifetime memory for the young fan and her family.

New York Mets Fans Melt Over the Heartfelt Gesture

Baseball is more about winning and losing, and statistics and moments like these prove it. Fenway Park has seen many such incidents since its opening in 1912, but each is special to every fan it affects.

If the comments section of the tweet is anything to go by, baseball fans generally appreciate gestures like these.

One fan pointed out how just when the video is about to end, the dad tries to fist bump Lindor but the shortstop has already turned around and doesn’t see it.

As expected, some couldn’t help but comment on his performance and the failing Mets either.
