The New York Mets just dominated the Houston Astros in an overwhelming victory. It was an exciting game from Max Scherzer finally giving a performance worthy of his reputation to Justin Verlander receiving his World Series ring. The Astros have surprised fans with their version of late, too, though not in a good way. 2023 may have started strong, but the recent sweep by the Cincinnati Reds has downplayed the power of the reigning World Series champs. It certainly didn’t help that they lost to the Mets, who are now 34-38 and trailing fourth in the NL East.

However, while they may have won 11-1, the New York team suffered another player injury, this time affecting a rookie. But fans are hopeful after a positive update.

Francisco Alvarez doesn’t seem to be in any serious trouble

Max Scherzer may have given one of the best starts of the season right after one of the worst ones, but not all was merry for the Mets. A rookie catcher, Francisco Alvarez, took a foul ball to his right hand. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that Mets trainer Joe Golia had checked Alvarez’s wrist for any severe damage. All seemed fine, however, and the 21-year-old stayed in the game after testing his hand with a few throws.

But the pain did not subside enough to let him play, and he left after eight innings. Injuries after getting hit by a ball are common in baseball, but the high speed at which they’re thrown can cause considerable damage. It was reported that Alvarez headed to get an X-Ray after leaving the game, but there was good news.

Preliminary X-Rays on his hand came back negative, although he might still have to undergo more tests. The young catcher will stay out of Tuesday’s lineup while he recovers, which everyone hopes happens sooner rather than later.

“You have already seen it. We produce more runs when he is in the lineup and doing what he does,” Brandon Nimmo told the New York Post. And indeed, Alvarez’s presence on the offense has been a force to be reckoned with. Now the team can only hope for a speedy recovery and swift return.
