The Boston Red Sox have been rather quiet in the offseason till now. When they finished last in their division last season, it was expected that they’d be a big participant in the market. Yet currently there’s not much sound coming from their end. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t working, but it seems they’re happy to remain behind the scenes for now. It is known, however, that they want a starting pitcher, and one of the biggest, Jordan Montgomery, just walked into Boston.

While the BoSox might be out of the Shohei Ohtani race, their offseason is far from being over. The team suffered immensely due to their questionable bullpen last season. Now they’re looking to change it and surprisingly they might have to move much to find a solution. Though Yoshinobu Yamamoto remains their biggest interest, they are willing to bet on other pitchers if the need arises.

The BoSox haven’t gone seriously after a pitcher till now. They didn’t talk to Aaron Nola and have only started preliminary talks with Blake Snell. One of the biggest free agents currently, Jordan Montgomery, is also their target and, according to the latest reports, things could’ve become easier for them.

According to MassLive, Jordan has relocated to Boston for the offseason to be in proximity to his wife, Mckenzie. She is undergoing a dermatology residency in the city. Observers have noted his engagement in throwing and workout sessions at Boston College.

With the ace right at their doorstep, things could get interesting for the Red Sox. Last season, their pitching let them down immensely while Monty was one of the biggest reasons for the Texas Rangers’ World Series triumph this year. He posted a 3-1 record with a 2.90 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and struck out 17 batters. Surely, they’d want to have such a player in Fenway Park. Especially if their pursuit of Yamamoto fails due to the sheer competition for the 25-year-old ace.

It’s worth highlighting that the South Carolina native is currently experiencing life in the city, providing him with an opportunity to assess the lifestyle. According to a source, the Red Sox are among numerous teams expressing interest in securing the services of this left-handed player. Meetings between the Red Sox and his representatives took place at the GM meetings in Arizona earlier this month. If in case the deal were to happen, how would Monty benefit the team?

While Monty’s initial move to Boston was primarily driven by his commitment to be with his wife, he might consider the possibility of joining the Red Sox if he finds that he enjoys his life in the city. This consideration could be particularly relevant if McKenzie is required to spend a few more years completing her residency there. Additionally, there is a significant advantage that Montgomery could bring to the Red Sox.

Montgomery is one of the few free agents to not have a qualifying offer attached to them. What this means is that he can be signed by a team without them having to sacrifice their draft compensation. This could be a huge benefit for the Red Sox, as not only will they get a proven pitcher, but they can utilize that draft compensation in other places. This could be a big reason why Monty is in such a demand.
