Often outspoken, the Yankees legend never shies away from speaking his mind. And that is the main reason sometimes, he faces backlash from MLB fans. In his recent appearance as an analyst, Alex Rodriguez gave his opinion on the easiest position to play in the MLB right now.

Alex Rodriguez thinks that being a starting pitcher is the easiest it has ever been

According to Alex Rodriguez, being a starting pitcher is not that difficult. While talking to Coin the Herd, he said that starting pitchers are getting paid a lot to do very little. And that it has never been this easy to be a starting pitcher in the MLB.

In the discussion, Rodriguez said, “Now, starting pitchers, take away the Verlander’s, the Scherzer’s and the Gerrit Cole’s of the world. But pitchers in this industry, in this era, have never made more money and have never been asked to do less. So you get paid more money, but you get yanked in the 5th or 4th inning.”

What’s more, is that A-Rod believes this trend is going to stick over time; that other than the elite starting pitchers, most starting pitchers will be not asked to do all that much.

This has certainly been reflected in the current offseason as free-agent pitchers are getting signed for a lot of money. Even back-of-the-rotation starting pitchers are getting paid more than expected because of the demand.

Why are pitchers getting paid so much to do so little?

The main reason is that the demand is larger than the supply. There is a clear shortage of quality starting pitchers in the league right now and that has led to a growing market. Teams have to spend more money on the quality starters that are available because of competition to sign players.

Furthermore, teams are now bringing in starting pitchers and developing them. So even if a pitcher is lacking, MLB teams are likely to take a chance on them.
