Steroids-era was a dark part of baseball for a number of years. The worst period was between the late 1980s and the early 2000s, commonly referred to as the steroid era. Several players reportedly used them, but their identities were not known. However, one player who is known to have used steroids is none other than the former World Series champion Lenny Dykstra.
Back in 2016, years after his retirement from the sport, Dykstra opened up about his usage of steroids. While doing so, he even shared some important details about his steroid usage.

During an interview with Scott Miller of Bleacher Report, the New York Mets legend revealed how he was able safely to procure and use steroids. He said that he cold-called a doctor and told him a story to get what he needed.
Per Bleacher Report, Dykstra said “So I knew ’90 was it for me. So that’s why I went to the library in Mississippi and looked it up. Ben Johnson, remember? (Johnson, the 100-meter gold medalist in the 1988 Olympics was stripped of his medal when he failed a drug test for steroid use.) I literally called up some doctor in Mississippi and told him the story I’m telling you. I have a family. I have a chance to make a lot of money. It’s not that I can’t play. I know how to do that. You don’t have to teach me that. But the schedule is six months. I’m just not physically big enough to hold up. If I can just stay strong…”

Using this method, Dykstra was able to safely procure and use steroids over the years. But even then, he had a few good years and was out of the league in 1996. The best year he had was in 1993, when he came second in MVP voting and lost to Barry Bonds. Dykstra has said both good and bad things about Bonds. But the most iconic moment of Dykstra’s career came very early.

The New York Mets were down 2-0 in the 1986 World Series and looked like they were going to lose. But one hit from Lenny Dykstra in Game 3 of the Series changed everything. Dykstra hit a leadoff home run to start Game 3 of the Series and sparked a comeback.
