Derek Jeter has long been seen as the perfect poster boy for the face of Major League Baseball. His position as the captain of the New York Yankees didn’t allow much room for failure. In the early 2000s, he was at an age where most young players would take advantage of their position to enjoy the pleasures of New York City. But Jeter was more of a homebody. He never fell prey to the lure of drugs or alcohol and kept his good-boy persona intact.

One big influence in his life was his dad, Dr. Sanderson Jeter. He used to work as a substance abuse counselor, so it was only logical he would leave an impact on his son. In fact, the young Jeter was so inspired by his dad that he founded a charity to help kids facing drug problems. And so was born the Turn 2 Foundation, which recently celebrated the 13th edition of its baseball clinic with a special guest in the house.

Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation invited Gary Sheffield to its baseball clinic

The charity holds an annual day where kids can come and learn to play baseball, or show off their skills in the sport. The event usually invites a big name from the MLB world – former pro baseballers that play with the young people and generally have fun. 2023 was the 13th edition of the Tampa Bay Baseball Clinic and ex-Yankee Gary Sheffield was the guest.

The foundation’s official Instagram page shared pictures from the day; where kids from all walks of life enjoyed baseball. From throwing pitches to hitting home runs, these youths did everything. A few photos show Sheffield giving tips and life lessons to his audience, which listens with rapt attention.

The post was captioned, “The students had the opportunity to strengthen their skills and hear from our special guest speaker, former MLB All-Star Gary Sheffield.” It also added that the lessons learned there could be applied both on and off the field.

The foundation had inspired kids to Turn 2 healthy lifestyles

Jeter established his org back in 1996 and over the years, it has managed to give back more than $34 million to the community. Their goal is to encourage youngsters to keep away from substances and instead turn towards healthier lifestyles.
