On April 10th every year, people all around the world celebrate the bond between siblings on World Siblings Day. This year, former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter joined these celebrations through his Instagram handle and took to social media to extend a heartfelt wish for his sister, Sharlee Jeter.

Derek Jeter’s younger sister, Sharlee, was born in 1979, five years after Derek. The two siblings always shared a very close bond, and a common interest in baseball – Sharlee was a softball champion in her college days. Today, she’s also the secretary of Derek’s Turn2Foundation.

Now, on the occasion of World Siblings Day, Sharlee Jeter uploaded two stories featuring Derek on her Instagram handle, with the #HappySiblingsDay.

The second story was a throwback to young Derek and Sharlee, with added text which said, “Love you! #HappySiblingsDay #WeOld” The five-time Yankees World Champion re-uploaded these stories on his Instagram handle.

Sharlee’s battle against cancer contributed to the increased closeness between Derek and Sharlee.

Sharlee Jeter – a warrior who fought the most difficult battle of her life all by herself

Back in November 2000, Sharlee first received the news that she had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Sharlee’s fight against cancer wasn’t easy, and even Derek Jeter, who was a sensation across North America, couldn’t save her.

In an interview from 2018, Sharlee spoke about her battle against cancer, and said, “Cancer became something for me that I had. I had said, wait a minute, nobody can compare me and Derek in this one. He hasn’t had it. He wouldn’t have handled it the same way. It’s something that I went through and it was like my personal badge of honor.”
