The New York Mets were supposed to be on top of the world once. Boasting the highest payroll in MLB meant they also had the league’s top talent. But they dashed all World Series hopes when the season actually started, with seemingly every single player underperforming. Two of the most touted players, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, were also two of the biggest disappointments.
Becoming teammates once again after signing with the Mets, the two co-aces had played together for the Detroit Tigers once before. Although it seemed like things off the field were going well, Scherzer recently revealed all in an honest interview.

Baseball fans were expecting a better display from the co-aces this season. But judging from the early season, the Mets decided it was time to ship them off. And it was that “diva” attitude caused Scherzer to grumble some about Verlander,” writes Andrew Battifarano.

Scherzer is now in his age-39 year, at the tail end of his professional baseball career. Although he holds one World Series title from his time with the Washington Nationals in 2019, every player covets as many chances as he can get at the biggest baseball title. It seemed impossible for the Mets to even make it to the playoffs this year, with the team not ready for even a 2024 comeback.

Scherzer knew it was time for him to part ways from New York. After his comments about the front office came to light, it seemed like Cohen answered back in retaliation. But now only time will tell what the Mets’ true plans for next season are, and whether they improve the roster with young talent.
