Shocking news for one and good news for someone else! That’s what it looks like amid the ongoing rumors and speculations surrounding a $56 million pitcher. It’s the Miami Marlins who may end up being dead in the water even before the start of the 2025 MLB season. The loss of their star pitcher could make things more difficult for them, as they have been awful this season. So what’s the fuss all about?
Well, first thing first, the Chicago Cubs are in pursuit of an elite arm to bolster their lineup. With the focus on improving the starting pitching, they need to add someone who can complement their lineup well. And for that reason, an MLB insider predicts a player who could be paired with Shota Imanaga. So, who seems to be making their way into the Cubs?
It’s the Miami Marlins’ ace pitcher, Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara had a good 2023 season prior to his Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2024 season. He had a 4.14 ERA in 20243, with 28 G, 184.2 IP, 151 strikeouts, and 1.21 WHIP. The healed pitcher has made his way back into the mound, and Alcantara might be a top candidate for a trade.

On March 24, MLB insider Anthony Castrovince made a bold prediction, saying, “I’m going with the premise that Alcantara is the darling of the deadline, and the Cubs look like a team that will have the need to amplify its pitching, the desire to nail down the division, and the financial might and farm system depth to get this done.” Sandy Alcantara is in the last year of his contract, and in case the Marlins do not extend the contract, the Cubs may get him. Although the Cubs have Matt Shaw, they have multiple other top prospects as well.
But the Cubs should put more effort into building a lasting roster, and Sandy Alcantara would be the best person to do that, wouldn’t he? With more than 200 innings, the acquisition of the right-handed pitcher could be a great bet for the Cubs. Sandy Alcantara could be paired with the lefty, Shota Imanaga, and that could be a great combination, striking out batters easily.
Not only would it reflect their commitment to securing talent who would leave a long-lasting impression, but also indicate their strategic move to secure the World Series title once. However, two other teams are also eyeing Alcantara- Mets and Braves, maybe?
What’s your perspective on:
Will Sandy Alcantara's move to the Cubs finally bring them the World Series glory they crave?

The Mets and Braves are looking to get Sandy Alcantara in their lineup
Amid the speculations surrounding the Chicago Cubs, eyeing a blockbuster trade for Sandy Alcantara, the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets are circling around like vultures to get him on board as well. Be it any team, Sandy getting a player of Alcantara’s caliber is a great thing. Not only does it enhance the chances of making it to the top, but it also bolsters their lineup. Although the Braves have a good starting rotation with Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, and Reynaldo Lopez, there are concerns looming over them due to a series of injuries. Thus, the Braves might be looking for a pitching upgrade soon. What about the Mets?

The New York Mets have a requirement of a starter at the top of their rotation. While they have some good starting options like Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga, they are in need of an ace pitcher. As Alcantara is back to the mound, being healthy and active, the Mets could be a potential destination for him this season. However, it all depends on whether the Miami Marlins would like to trade him or they would extend his contract, given the demands Alcantara might have. In that case, the Mets do have the money to put forward a good offer on his table that could be worth it for the Marlins.
So, which team according to you might get Sandy Alcantara—will it be the Marlins, Mets, Braves, or any other team? Share your comment below.
