The Boston Red Sox seem to have a bigger issue in front of them right now! Their third baseman, Rafael Devers, might just go out amid the Bregman-Devers 3B saga. As pointed out by MLB insider Jeff Passan, if money is a factor behind buying him and moving him anywhere, then there’s a probable chance of him wanting to exit the Red Sox, isn’t it?
Kind of surprising for everyone that during the first day of spring training, the Red Sox’s third baseman made one thing clear—he won’t be moving to another position. Period! Despite the Red Sox signing the Astros’ All-Star Alex Bregman, Devers seems to be standing firm on his statement to remain at third base. But does this really make sense, or is it rather creating a dilemma for Boston?
Well, for Boston, news of Rafael Devers’ willingness to exit has instilled a sense of fear among them. As Devers had an impressive average of .272 with 28 homers, 143 hits, 83 RBIs, and 87 runs scored in 138 games in 2023, it’s difficult for the Red Sox to imagine without him. Now, on February 20, MLB insider Jeff Passan said on the Boston Sports Gordo, “The money in this situation is such that they are buying Rafael Devers’ bat, and they can move him wherever the hell they want to.”

Passan thinks the Boston Red Sox could move Rafael Devers to any position because they purchased him to bat at any position, but isn’t that just making things look awful? Well, he continued, “The only question for me at this point is, does this get ugly to the point where he wants out?” It’s quite evident that in case Devers is forced to change his position to second from his usual third base position, he may leave Boston anytime. So, where will the Red Sox head for now?

Alex Cora has his say on the Bregman-Devers 3B tossle
Although there was significant opposition to the Red Sox’s acquisition of former Astros All-Star Alex Bregman because Rafael Devers had vowed to stay at third base, it ultimately proved to be a matter of faith rather than a struggle. However, Alex Cora is hopeful to make things alright, given that he shared a close bond with Alex Bregman from their time in Houston, but that’s not all!

With Alex Bregman sharing his intention to move anywhere the team wants him to play, Cora stresses flexibility. He believes that decisions are to be properly made to develop the roster and plan for the future to ensure that they have the best team moving forward. Alex Cora instilled faith in Devers to play third baseman; however, he wishes to make decisions that will be best suited for the team at present and in the future.

While it is too early to say where Alex Bregman will play, we all can assume that the Red Sox won’t change Devers’ position until there’s a need to, given that Bregman can shift positions. While flexibility plays a major role in making such decisions, it all comes down to whether it’s a battle between the titans or a testament of faith in a specific player. What’s your opinion on this?
